My name is Jenny, I am a senior at Woodbridge High School on the varsity tennis team and have played #1 doubles the past three years. My freshman year I played volleyball instead of varsity tennis because that was what I was passionate about at the time and I had an urge to try something new. I've been playing competitively since I was 10 in Junior Team Tennis which was always the highlight of my weekend. What I will never forget about Junior Team Tennis is all the times my team went to Sectionals at Indian Wells and we got to hang out together at hotels, eat buffet breakfasts, and play against some of the best teams in Southern California. It was a great beginning to the world of tennis for me and my journey in tennis continues in high school and USTA tournaments. This past year I worked as both a private tennis instructor and also as an assistant coach at a tennis camp by the City of Irvine. I love coaching tennis because it is so much fun and I enjoy helping other kids to improve their skills.
Our season just ended in high school and it was the best season I've ever had. I was Co-Captain of the team and I just love how our team got along so well and we were a much stronger team than previous years. We made it to the first round of CIFs and played our hearts out but we ended up playing the team that won it all. I couldn't be more proud of how our season ended and the great friendships that came out of this season. I also loved helping mentor the younger girls and trying to help them not only develop their game but also their mental toughness.
School and education are my priorities and I hope to get into a good college and pursue a career in science. As of right now I'm really interested in science, especially the environment. Two summers ago I was selected into a program by USC Sea Grant at Catalina Island where 20 of us high schoolers learned about marine science for a week while staying at the Wrigley Marine Institute. We went kayaking, hiking, snorkeling with leopard sharks, did a live video chat with the USS Joides, made ROVs, while having the most fun packed week ever. Continuing with my interest in the environment, I love to help out at the Back Bay Science Center at their monthly marine inventories where we find new marine creatures at the bay every month and I love the hands on experience, I even got to pet a sea slug, slimy but cool!
