When I first decided to pick up a tennis racquet as a little girl, I wanted to learn how to play just as well as my dad could. I figured it couldn't be too hard, all I had to do was hit the ball over the net. Little did I know that there was so much more to it. Something that drew me to the sport despite the fact that every one of my friends was on the soccer team or at the softball field. The way that tennis teaches you how to think on your feet, all in your own mind during a match, is what excited me. I wanted to have to try to outwit my opponent, which was not something that other sports gave me the opportunity to do. The skills that I have learned from the game have also translated into my academics. Tennis has taught me how to excel to the best of my ability in school by remaining calm during stressful times and when facing the pressure of tests.
Within the last year, I feel as though I have made leaps and bounds in my game, and I am motivated to see how much I can improve further. My ranking may not be as high as other girls' out there, but it has drastically increased over the past year. With wins over some of the top ranked girls, I have proven to myself that I have the potential to succeed in tough competition.
