Personal Statement
My name is Povi, it is a Hopi Indian word for flower, which is a good way to describe my personality. I am a very strong Christian, I care about/get along very well with others, I am passionate, I am dedicated, and I know how to lead when I need to lead and follow when I need to follow. My interests include church, Flagstaff ROAM - Runners on a Mission, a running club my parents coach, Flagstaff Tri-tans Triathlon Club, and I work at a child care called Kingdom Kids.
So far, I have considered studying the following fields: Psychology (counseling, or social work of some sort), Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Coaching, or Nutrition. My academic strengths consist of focus, hard work, motivation, analytic thought, and I like a challenge. I have taken several Advanced Placement courses.
I grew up running, starting at the age of 5, it is a lifestyle me and my family live. My dad continues to break age-group records in the 800m, 1500m, mile, 5K, 8K, and 10K. At the age of 60, he just won Gold medals in the 800m, 1500m, and 5K at the Senior Nationals in Alabama and at the Huntsman World Games. His current world ranking is 6th in the 800m and 10th in the 1500m. My mom, runs half-marathons and competes in triathlons. As a family, we have competed regularly in local 5K, 10K and triathlon races, beginning with me in a stroller. I didn't actually start training until 6th grade but have not stopped since then. I am passionate about the sport of running, especially distance running. My freshman time for the mile was 5:48 , and 3200 was 11:57 but my main focus is cross country and as a senior my fastest 5k was 19:10 (at 7000 feet in elevation) and as a sophomore my personal record was 18:43. I just ran a certified 10k (the day after my state meet) and ran a 40:58. I have not reached my peak and can't wait to see how far I can go in distance running.
My goal in college is to complete a degree in my field of interest with honors and, at the same time, continue to compete in running at the 5K, 10K distance with the same dedication and passion I began with in elementary school. My life long goal is continue to be running, and racing for a life-time, like my 60 year old father and 85 year old grandfather.
