I have been an athlete most of my life. I've learned a lot from sports; such as how to get along with other people, how to set a positive example and how to work hard to achieve goals. A while back, I remember telling my mom that I wanted to find a sport that I truly loved. It took me fourteen years, but I finally found that sport; track and field.
I've actually been running most of my life playing soccer and basketball, but I did not start in track until my freshman year in high school. I had just finished my soccer season and I thought...why not join track? To be honest, I did it to stay in shape during the off-season. Those first few days at track changed my life forever. I met my coach, Rick Synold. He showed me hidden talents that I had no idea I possessed. He inspired me to really immerse myself in the sport he loved. I spent hours practicing with him and from then on, I knew that I was destined to run track for the rest of my life. I had finally found a sport that I enjoyed so much I could not stop thinking about it.
The summer after freshman year, my family moved to California. Leaving New Jersey was a big change, but an exciting one. I would be joining a whole new school and a new team. I immediately emailed the coach and signed up for their summer training program. As the new person on an established team, I knew I had to set a positive example in order to be truly accepted. I worked really hard and encouraged my teammates to do their very best every day. I'm happy to say that my teammates have become my friends; both on and off the field.
While I've learned a lot from coach Synold, I continue to grow as an athlete and a person under my new coaches. Academics are equally as important to me, so I've learned how to do well in both by prioritizing my time and staying organized. I realize I will need those skills even more in college. I take challenging classes and demand excellence of myself academically. I plan to pursue a career in the medical field or bio-engineering.
I'm passionate about track and my education. It would be a privilege for me to pursue both in college. I will always work hard to improve and I strive to set a great example for the team in the hopes of inspiring others to love the sport as much as I do.
