Personal Statement
I am hopeful the recruiting process will open the doors to some schools I might not otherwise be able to attend from a financial standpoint. I love to pole vault, but my main goal is to obtain a quality education which will provide employment opportunities upon graduation. As I am just starting my junior year in high school, I am exploring whether I want to become a doctor or a lawyer. My Dad is a judge, and that area I am pretty familiar. We have several friends who are doctors and I have been talking to them. Any school I attend will need to afford me an opportunity to pursue a post-graduate degree at some university. As far a pole vaulting is concerned, I would like to be part of a winning program--one where each of my teammates is focused on winning, and doing whatever it takes to be a winning program. My pole vault coach has coached some very talented high school pole vaulters who have gone on to be accomplished college vaulters (one won a national championship I believe). He tells me I am fundamentally sound and can go much higher than the 10-foot height I have done as a sophomore. In practice I am clearing much higher heights. My goal for my junior year is to clear 11 feet, although my coach tells me 11 feet 6 inches is a possibility. Update: My junior year has been tough from a practice standpoint. Due to the State basketball tournament, the weather, and Spring Break, I have had only 4 jumping days of practice all season. After finally locating a pole to use, I have had one jumping practice with it and the State championships are 4 days away.
