Personal Statement

My name is Emma Dietz.  I am a scholar, an athlete, and a highly committed individual.  I strive to run track in college, because I want to push myself both academically and athletically. I enjoy the battle of competing at the highest levels in academics and athletics. I want to pursue a graduate degree either in the field of medicine or law and I believe playing a sport in college will help me achieve this goal. It is important to me to not only strengthen my mind, but also my body. I know from my parents, who were both Division 1 athletes at The University of Michigan, that mental toughness, persistence and determination are the skills honed through competition that can be applied throughout life.

I attend Everest Collegiate High School where I run track on a joint varsity track program with Our Lady of The Lakes High School in Waterford, MI. At Everest I have taken the most difficult curriculum available to me, including all honors classes and two AP classes in both my Junior and Senior Year. I have been on both the All-A Honor Roll, and A-B Honor Roll throughout my high school career. I plan on taking AP Chemistry and AP English Literature and Writing next year. I am a member of the National Honor Society. I have also been named to the All-Academic for the Catholic League of Detroit. I am currently the Forensic Champion for the 2013/14 school year with a recitation of an open letter to Dennis Rodman from Shin Dong-hyuk in the Washington Post. I chose this because I believe athletes have an opportunity to influence others who look up to them.  In college, I want to be a leader on the athletic field and in the classroom to achieve success.  My parents set a great example, they were both Captains and Academic All-Americans and have shared with me the benefits of striving for excellence in both arenas. Becoming a lawyer and a business entrepreneur will require the competitiveness and strong character required of successful student/athlete. Testing on the Track and in the Classroom will help me develop the necessary skills to help others in my chosen profession.

Being a student-athlete will give me the opportunity to become part of a team, which will aid me no matter what profession I ultimately choose. I was named to the Oakland County Track Team during my Freshman Year and won All-Catholic Honors for the 400M and All-League for the 200M. I was also All-Catholic for Tennis as well. After a stress fracture injury incurred after a week long Tennis Camp during Spring Break in South Carolina sidelined me from my Sophomore year tennis and track seasons, I was determined to make it to the State Finals my Junior Year. I ran Cross Country in the Fall while also continuing to train for tennis in the USTA. In the winter I decided to say farewell to tennis in order to focus my attention on track. I began the track season committed to my goal of reaching the State Finals. I achieved that goal and ran a PR in the 400M. I believe with the right coaching, correct form and now my single commitment to track, I will be able to lower my times even further. I am only just at the cusp of my career in Track and Field.
