Personal Statement

My name is Maelie Hope, I will be a senior at Whitehall High School this year. I have been a sports person since the day I was born, and I have found that I am great at whatever sport I choose to pursue. I come from a hard-working blue-collar family. My grandfather immigrated to this country with $20 in hand and now is a self-made millionaire. My family is driven, and so am I.  The first sport I ever played was soccer, back in 1st grade. After practice, I'd practice at home, and on the days we didn't have practice, I practiced at home. The year after, I still played soccer, but I also wrestled. Everyone said I was as tough as nails, and nothing feels better to a little girl than her beating boys so bad that they cried. A couple of years later I was taken out of wrestling because, to say the least, losing didn't agree with me. But I was still playing soccer, in 4th grade, I had a PR in the number of goals I scored in a game, I scored 14 goals. 5th grade came and I was still playing soccer, I was actually so determined to get better that I started going to the gym to make my legs stronger so I could run faster and kick the ball harder. 7th grade came and I discovered track & field. I ran the 70m, 100m, 4x100m, and threw shot put. Turns out, I was good at all of them, but the next year I was even better. Oh, and I was still top of my team for soccer. I started taking the gym more seriously, I was working all of my muscle groups, and come to find out, I was actually really strong, and that strength came into play for track. In 8th grade, my mother was divorcing my dad and it appears that the court system doesn't like it too much when the kid chooses the father over the mother (even if the mother was a severe and abusive alcoholic) for some reason, so my dad and I were going through some very hard times. Despite my mental state, I got 1st in state for shot, 2nd in the 100m, and 4th in the 70m, I also broke the school record for shot and the 70m. High school came and I discovered powerlifting. Now I'm 3 time state champion for that and hold some state records. for the 155lbs. weight class I have the bench record of 185lbs, and for the 165lbs. weight class I have the records for squat (315lbs.), deadlift (375lbs.), and the total (920lbs.). For track my 100m career was supposed to take off, but in the 2021 season I broke my leg playing soccer. When I broke my leg we weren't even sure it was broken. I went home and rested, the next day we got it x-rayed, found out it was broken, and within 1 hour I was in the gym getting in my chest day. I wasn't going to let my broken leg stop my track season, so I threw disc and shot in my stupid boot that was supposed to help my leg. At the end of that track season, I had a 35' throw in shot, and a 113' throw in discus. Now it was the 2022 track season. I threw soccer out of the picture because I said, "No more setbacks". I ran my first meet and got a 13.09 and the, at the second track meet I tore my hamstring. So there went my 100m career again, however, my discus throws took off that year and my shotimproved. For shot I got a 40'3. As for disc, officially my farthest throw was 143'9", I unofficially threw over 150 but I didn't keep my stupid foot in the ring. I just can't wait to achieve my dreams of being both a spectacular athlete and becoming a doctor.
