Personal Statement

I am now a senior and have had great success in track and field as well as the other sports in which I have participated.  I participated in varsity track and basketball as an eighth grade student.  I played to post position quite successfully and missed qualifying for the state track meet, as an eighth grader by 1 1/2 inches.  I had successful seasons in volleyball, basketball and track my freshman year.  In ninth grade I played C team (freshman) volleyball and was able to suit out and play a little JV as well.  In basketball, my freshman year, I continued to play varsity basketball at the post position and I grew quite a bit as an outside shooter as well.  My freshman year in track I qualified for the state track meet in discus and took 5th overall at the state meet.  In September of my sophomore year I rolled a go kart and suffered a badly broken left humerus.  Due to this injury I was force to sit our of volleyball and basketball my sophomore year.  As we entered spring, it was determined that the bone was still not healed but I sought permission from my orthopedic doctor to participate in track.  Despite the fact that training was out of the question, I participated and  had a pretty good season.  I placed in the top three at nearly every meet.  I was the District champion in discus and qualified for the state meet in both discus and shot.  I finished the year with a 2nd place medal in state for discus and a fifth place medal in shot put.  In July, 2010 I had surgery to fix my broken humerus, almost one year after I broke the bone.  As a result of the surgery I was unable to participate in volleyball and basketball again.  However, in November I began a core and speed training program and worked tirelessly on throwing and improving.  My junior year in track I had a great year, though it could have been better.  I was district runner up in discus and district champion in shot put.  I qualified for state in both events and went on to finish the year as the state champion in shot put and 3rd in the state for discus.  I earned invitations to the Marilyn Sepulveda Classic and the Great Southwest Track and Field Classic.
To say I'm a hard worker and can overcome adversity is an understatement.  I'm a 5'7", 185 lb athlete with good game sense, the ability to "psych" myself up and I am VERY coachable.
I hope to compete at the next level and am sure that I can be an asset to any program.
My plans are to study geology and I'm interested in participating and gaining my education at a University that offers Geology, is mid to large size but I am open to just about anywhere.
There are five people in my family.  My father is self-employed as a farrier and my mother is the director of a local program.  I have two sisters.  One who just graduated from college with a MS in Engineering and my other sister who is attending UNM and studying pre-law.  We've always had what we need but we're not wealthy.  My sisters both qualified for FAFSA and I assume I will as well.
I've accomplished a great deal in my athletic career and my goal is, as I enter my senior year, to be a back to back state champiion..
