I started running in the sixth grade for my middle school team. At first it was just a way to meet people and have fun following in my sisters footsteps. In the seventh grade, I had the unique opportunity to train under former NCAA and Olympic athlete, Julie Shea. This is where my love for running truly took form as I began to train on a regular basis and learned the value of hard work and dedication. As I started running in my high school years, I began to realize how much I loved the competitive and racing side of the sport, while also taking a long run once a week.
I want to continue my running career at a higher level for many reasons, one being the team aspect. Running is such a fulfilling sport because you learn so much about yourself and your limits, while also wanting to push them further. Having girls next to me on my team and having the same goal in mind is my goal for college. It would be a dream of mine to have a team of girls encouraging themselves and each other on and off the course.
Another exciting part of running is the intensity of racing and competing. The rush of excitement before every race and at the end of every long run has definitely made me who I am today. I think of myself as a very competitive person already, and running has just fueled this. I have learned so much through wins and losses and injuries, I believe I am a stronger person because of this sport which makes me love it even more!
I am not completely set on what I want to study in college, but I know my profession will be along the lines of helping people whether it’s medical or social needs.
