Personal Statement

Grades Up, Times Down, Rock On. From the moment I finished my first cross country race, I have lived by this motto. Excelling academically and on the trails and track are two central aspects of my life. Running is what I do naturally. It was a part of my identity, even before others associated my name with running. When classmates at school say “Emma Johnston? Oh, she’s the runner,” I am tremendously flattered and proud. I particularly love the freedom of trail running, and have introduced my teammates to the joy of long runs in a nearby preserve. Our fall and spring trips together are among my happiest memories. My high school athletic goals include making it to States, running at Nike Cross Nationals, running a sub-19  minute 5K and a sub-5 minute 1500. With focus, hard work and positive thoughts, these are reachable goals. I see myself running in college and being part of a team, and I have a great deal to contribute. I will be a loyal college teammate, and will be the team’s most enthusiastic supporter. I know this to be true because I display loyalty to my cross country and track teams by supporting and celebrating my teammates’ accomplishments. I will be a team leader. I am today. I’m the teammate others look to for information and advice. I’m the athlete coaches look toward as an example of pushing through injury and working hard during every practice. I’m proud to have earned their respect on the track and in the locker room. I am a fierce competitor who leaves everything I’ve got on the track or trail. I push myself farther with each race, and have the drive to compete and perform at the highest level. But when I cross the finish line, I take pride in demonstrating true sportsmanship and helping others who are injured. Loyalty and leadership are major parts of my competitive spirit and together, they will make me an outstanding addition to my college team. Academically, I have chosen challenging coursework and my GPA accurately reflects my efforts. I am taking all Honors classes as well Advanced Placement courses, and plan to continue at this level until graduation. Aside from competing and learning, I developed a school-wide program that helps new students get acclimated to our school, I play on a spring travel soccer team and I make sure to spend time with my family and friends. And my motto? The rock is real. I am also a bass player in a rock band. Grades Up, Times Down, Rock On.

NCSA COLLEGE RECRUITING®

NCSA College Recruiting® (NCSA) is the nation’s leading collegiate recruiting source for more than 500,000 student-athletes and 42,000 college coaches. By taking advantage of this extensive network, more than 92 percent of NCSA verified athletes play at the college level. The network is available to high school student-athletes around the country through valued relationships with the NFLPA, FBU, NFCA and SPIRE. Each year, NCSA educates over 4 million athletes and their parents about the recruiting process through resources on its website, presentations of the critically-acclaimed seminar College Recruiting Simplified, and with Athletes Wanted, the book written by NCSA founder Chris Krause.
