Personal Statement
I am an eager and committed student-athlete who values personal growth, inspired achievement and team success. I have always been focused on exceling in the classroom and realizing my goals for college and career – while appreciating the many opportunities I have each day to be the best daughter, sister, family member, friend and neighbor I can be. My academic interests include creative writing, journalism, history, psychology and social sciences, and I am dedicated athletically to track and field, especially the high jump, and to basketball.
A future Easton High School Class of 2017 graduate, I am in the 10th grade taking all Honors and AP classes, while also playing two varsity sports and involved in many other outside and career-development interests. I have taken AP Chemistry and am currently taking AP History, and last year finished 70th in my class of over 600. Always one of the tallest and fastest kids, I began playing soccer at 5, then became immersed in swimming for 8 years. I was an excellent breast-stroke and freestyle swimmer, a District qualifier, and broke several invitational and club records, but stopped to focus on track and basketball.
I have been playing league basketball for only three years, and last year was my first year in track and learning to high jump. With very little experience, raw mechanics and limited instruction, I jumped 5’1” – however I then sustained a season-interrupting ankle injury, but still came back to place 5th in the District championship (while matching the same high jump height of the 3rd place finisher). I also ran a 1.02 split in the 1600 meters race without practicing for this event. I am eager to get further coaching and instruction to improve my performance and contribution to Easton’s track team.
In this, only my third year playing organized basketball, I will be the starting center on the varsity team – which team I made as a freshman and played substantial time at backup center. I have also played for the Lehigh Valley Nitro (AAU) where I was selected to the USJN pool all-star team, and now play for the Lehigh Valley Fever AAU team as center/forward. I excel at running the court, defending, blocking shots, passing, rebounding, post play and mid-range jumpers, and I can jump and touch a regulation height rim. I love expanding my game and honing my skills, and enjoy my roles and the dynamics of playing competitive team basketball.
In addition to school, sports and family, I spend time volunteering at an animal shelter, at a local hospital in the ER, at Easton sports and youth camps, and with Lauren’s ‘First and Goal’ – a non-profit founded by my neighbors which provides financial support for brain tumor research and cancer services and which is now recognized nationally. I love writing, photography, video and travel, and I enjoy challenging myself. I aspire to become a media journalist, writer and published author. My favorite feeling comes from knowing that I’ve inspired someone or changed their outlook on life in a positive way. Being a good role model is very important to me.
Which is why I recognize that it is essential for me to get a good education and develop the necessary skills for the work that interests me and where I can make a meaningful impact to others and in the world. I love both academics and athletics and value that playing sports in college and on organized teams can help me build character, gain greater self-discipline, and set and achieve both personal and team goals, providing me with a way to represent my university, classmates, family and community, while creating wonderful memories to last a lifetime.
