Personal Statement

In the spring of 2012, as a seventh grader, I was faced with the question “Do you want to participate in track and field?” My initial answer was no, but with the help and guidance of my parents I changed my answer to yes. My first experience with track and field was not exactly what I expected. My first events were the 100 meter dash, 400 meter relay, 800 meter relay, and the high jump. The running events were fine, but the high jump was a different story. The starting height in seventh grade was 3 feet 6 inches, yet without any training I scratched all three jumps. After the event I cried m eyes out because I was the tallest competitor but I was the first competitor out. Once I pulled myself together my mom took me back to the mats and taught me the basics of what she understood about the event.

With that subtle training I went on to become the 7th grade district champion. I also tied the district record with a jump of 4 feet 10 inches. When the season was over I realized I had found a new love that could take me to college or even the Olympics. I know that with the proper training and hard work my newly found Olympic dreams could easily come true.

In 2013  my coach introduced me to a new event. I learned to triple jump during my first season of summer track after my coach just wanted me to try something. Since then I have gone on to be accepted in the Project Triple Jump program sponsored by the National Scholastics Athletic Foundation (NSAF). I feel confident that I can be an Olympian in this event as well. The ultimate achievement, second only to being a gold medal Olympian, would be to qualify for a single Olympics in both the high jump and the triple jump.

I am a good candidate for a next level team because I am a very coachable athlete. I apply instruction quickly and efficiently. I try to encourage others around me with a happy “love what I’m doing” attitude. I strive for excellence in the classroom because I am a student first. Being a student always comes first in the classroom and in my sports because there is always something to learn about your event. Whatever school I choose I will work hard. I plan to become a leader in the classroom and on the track.
