Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Caitlyn Taylor Nowlin and I am currently 16 years of age. I live in a small town in the great state of Texas, and will be entering Junior this August. I love to throw discus and shot put, and I am involved not only with my school but also USA Track and Field. This is my Second year to be part of USATF, and I have been fortunate enough to advance to the USATF National Junior Olympics. I compete as an unattached athlete, I enjoy competition, meeting new people, and getting feedback from other coaches about my throwing style. I am passionate about throwing, and will also soon develop javelin and hammer throw over the next year.
I believe in hard work, being dedicated to not only your sport, but to family as they are the ones who support me through all my ups and downs. Family is very important to me, my mom and dad have been there to encourage me, guide me, and allow me to follow my dreams. Those dreams I hope will one day lead me to the US Olympic team, but for now I work diligently and daily in that pursuit.
I started throwing discus and shot put my 7th grade year (2010) and at first I was unsure, but as time went on I realized I could do this. Now I live for training daily and stepping in the ring to improve my technique. Being able to improve myself led me to capture the 2011 Junior High District Championship in Discus, and placed me 2nd in Shot Put. Now I turn myself to my high school career and have set my goal to making it to the state championship as a freshman. I know this will require hard work and dedication both in the classroom and on the field.
I am 6’ 0”, weigh 240 lbs, and to date my best throw has been 120ft in practice 102ft in tournament. One of my most important accomplishment to me has been placing 4th at the USATF Region 12 Championship to advance to the USATF National Junior Olympics. I see daily how hard work and determination drives me closer to my dreams. I even won the state homeschool track and field discus throw.
What I can offer your team is dedication, leadership, and determination. I believe in being first on the field and the last to leave. I ask questions, I am open to criticism (as long as it is constructive), I love to learn new techniques that will improve my abilities, and a willingness to help where ever needed. When I started to seriously throw this past year, I realized that I wanted to take my throwing past high school and throw for a college. A big reason is because I want to be able to attend medical school, but my parents are limited in means and I figured my talent to throw could lead me to be able to further my education.
I am looking seriously at Division I and Division II schools that have pre-medical or a medical school already associated with them. My major in college will be Pre-Med and my goal is to eventually become an Orthopedic Surgeon or an ER doctor, and in order to achieve that goal I would like the school I attend to give me easy access to that program. Also, I am not to particular on the geographical location of the school, as my parents have always wanted the best for me and if that leads me out of Texas than they are just fine with that.
My realistic goals are to be able to compete at a collegiate level as a freshman, to play at the highest level I can and to contribute all that I can to my team. Most of all I know that as an incoming freshman I will have a lot to learn about what the college coach will require of me. The good thing about me is that I am always willing to try new ideas and if they benefit my throwing I am willing to make the change.
I will be applying for financial aid/grants via FASFA, in order to attend college and to help to relieve the stress off my parents and financial burden that comes with college.
