Personal Statement

My name is Lauren Hoffman, and I am A student athlete  at Battlefield High School, Haymarket, Virginia. I have had a passion for running ever since I was little, and I see no end to my drive in this challenging, and rewarding sport. I am a hardworking and coachable athlete ready to take on any task that is given to me. When I set goals, I never fail to accomplish them due to my inner self-motivation. I am driven to improve my skills and technique every day. In my opinion, running is a mental sport; I can only achieve what my mind will allow me to accomplish. I have learned that positivity and confidence are key to being successful as an individual, and as an athlete.

I began my track career by joining the “Girls on the Run” program in fifth grade. A year later I moved on to join the track team at Bull Run Middle School. The girl’s team placed first in the conference championships for all three years I attended Bull Run. In my eighth grade year I earned the title of conference champion for the 55 meter hurdles. In high school I decided to play sports all year round. My sophomore year, I tried out and made the Fall JV volley ball team (conference champions for the season), Winter Indoor varsity track team, and Spring Outdoor varsity track team. My high school track seasons have been the most successful – 4 seasons, 4 Varsity letters. I am currently a Conference Champion (55mH, 100mH, 300mH), All-Region (55mH, 100mH, 300mH), All-State (300mH), and competed in the New Balance Nationals (4x100, 4x200) and AAU Junior Olympic Games (100mH, 400mH).

I manage my time effectively so that I have enough time in the day to train as well as focus on my academics in the evening. I have been an A and B Honor Roll student since middle school and I take AP and pre-AP classes. I am a member of National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, Key Club, Freshman Orientation Group, and a delegate of the Student Council Association. I believe in actively participating in my school and devoting my time for community service when the opportunity arises. I regularly volunteer at the Haymarket Food Pantry to help distribute food to those in need. I have also volunteered each year in the “Literacy for Schools Book Drive” to help distribute books to elementary schools who could not afford books, and the “Wounded Warriors Program” where I helped put together care packages for homeless veterans and their families. In 2010 I was presented with the Haymarket Women’s Club Citizenship Award.

My biggest accomplishment in my track career was earning 4th place in the 300 meter hurdles at the 6A State Championship my sophomore year. I recall placing 10th as a freshman and again, seeded 10th as sophomore; I was determined to change this placement. I worked hard at practice as well as practicing on the weekends on my own time. I gave that final race everything that I had and earned a personal record of a 45.02 and the all-state title. I remember hearing the results being announced and instantly feeling self accomplishment fill me with happiness and pride. My sophomore year was inevitably the most gratifying year for me - I was presented with the Physical Education Department Award for Outstanding Female Athlete, the Indoor Track & Field Women’s Most Valuable Player Award, and finally, the Winter Track & Field Coaches Award. I have also earned All-County and All-District titles in Bel Canto Chorus.
