Personal Statement

My name is Zaria Barnes, I am a rising Junior who will be attending Osbourn Park Senior High School next year. I was taught at a young age never to give up or let your failures crush you from my parents who instilled it in me. I strive to work hard at my goals, both in track and in my dream of working in Forensic Pathology, I want to be the best that I can be, and I am willing to work diligently at my unyielding goals.

I believe that I am a strong competitor and aim to not only improve myself but to better my team and those I work with. I am always open to criticism because I know that criticism shapes people and allows them to grow. I strive to not only be an active athlete but to be the best that I can be in the classroom, and one day in a business, because I know that to become the best athlete I need also to become the best me.

I love running track because it's both a team and individual sport. I enjoy running in relays because they show how a few athletes can come together and create one powerful unit. In addition to running I have a passion for jumping because it gives me "wings" in a way, whether its high jump or long jump. I can not accurately describe the feeling of jumping, it isn't like any other thing I've experienced and I absolutely love it. Even if I don't jump my best I get back out there, because I know that there is something great out there for me and I have to keep working towards it everyday. I believe that my track career has grown since I first started running in 2011, and I trust that I am going to grow with the help of my family, friends, coaches, and teammates.

Training

  • Midle school
  • 3 years
  • I attended Parkside Middle school, in Manassas Virginia for 3 years. 6th grade was my first year of track. I didn't start high jumping until my 7th grade year and I've been jumping ever since. I believe at the end of my 8th grade track season I was running a 1min 16sec 400, a 31sec 200, and jumping 4ft 8in in the high jump.
  • High school
  • 1 year
  • AAU
  • 3 years
  • I started AAU track with PWC Panthers at the end of my 8th grade year (the summer before 9th grade). I improved immensely that summer I cut my 400 time down from 1min 16secs to 1min 8secs to eventually 1min 5secs at the end of that season. I also came in jumping 4ft 8in in high jump but by the end of the season I was jumping 5ft even. That following summer season (the end on my 9th grade year) I had cut my 400 down to 1min 3 secs, and I was jumping 5ft 3in in the high jump, that year I had also started competing in the 400 hurdles and finished the season with a time of 1min 8secs. The next year (end of my 10th grade year) I was jumping between 5ft 4in and 5ft 6in in the high jump. I ran the 400 in 61 secs and my 200 was 26.5 secs.
