My friends and I have this thing called Sunday Practice. On Sundays during the track and field season, we will walk, run, or drive to the school, uncover the Jumping pits, drag out the hurdles, brush off the circles (which in our case is a parking lot adjacent to the football field) , and practice. We often lose track of time (no pun intended), getting lost in the high of exercise and the therapeutic effect of the repetition. One of my favorite quotes is, "Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect." While I believe that skill and precision are large aspects of athletics, I also believe that the majority of my skill is attributed to passion. There is this beauty and elegance to throwing that I love, and its challenging nature keeps me out on the field long after the rest of the team has gone home. My school does not have a lot of resources for the means of training. The rural Vermont high school provides us with an overgrown jumping pit- accessorized with a disintegrating runway, an always damp high-jump pit with stuffing falling out of its many holes, and a dirt road that just barely forms an oval. Our weight room was torn down my freshman year, and our one throwing circle was dug up for reasons unknown. You might wonder why I'm mentioning all of this, after all, you are not a building contractor. My reasoning is that I think my situation has given me a strength that can't be found in the gym (noted the gym is still important). I can throw discus in rain and snow, on dirt and gravel, in the hot or cold. It's given me grit. Having little to work with hasn't slowed me down. The way I see it, if our equipment wasn't so run down and undesirable, our athletics director wouldn't leave it outside 24/7; Sunday practice wouldn't exist. Still, the athletic amenities you college provides could allow me to contribute even more to your team. Given the proper equipment and training, I am positive that I can go above and beyond any expectations you have. My dreams are big, but my determination is bigger. There will not be a single day on your campus where I am not working to be the best student athlete I can be.
Update: After training all summer, I finally reached my short term goal of 130 feet. Videos of my throwing will be posted soon. Thank you for the time you have spent reading over my profile.
