Personal Statement

What makes me a good person and a great leader? To me, being a good leader is when I always keep things positive and encourage others to strive for success. I am intelligent and great with problem solving. I am a very determined individual and refuse to give up. Being self-disciplined, I keep myself on track and keep things organized and thoroughly planned out. I am hardworking and prefer to do things the right way (even if it is challenging) rather than the easy way. I make other people happy by being kindhearted and an overall excepting person who believes everyone deserves kindness. Staying focused on important tasks helps me better myself for the future. My goal is to do my best to encourage other people to be the same leader I am.

All throughout school I have been on the honor roll. I like to take school seriously because one day it will impact my future. While taking a community service class I helped some of my teachers set up and later take down gym equipment, keep score, organize papers, label folders, and even take attendance. I have been an active member of the National Honor Society for two years. I was even nominated for secretary my junior year of high school. I have been a member of the Teen Advisory Board for seven years and the captain for four years at the Ravenswood Public Library where we host clean up days for our neighborhood and do activities for as well as with the nursing homes and animal shelters. Before they stopped having meetings, I was a member of the Anti-Drug Coalition and made over 30 positive posters for schools and businesses and even helped clean up cigarette butts (using gloves of course) throughout our parks and town. I have been practicing welding for five years, two of which were at the Roane-Jackson Technical Center. On my fourth year I managed to receive three certifications: plate welding, pipe welding, and mig welding. I am currently working towards my tig certifications. I have been lucky enough to receive a student of the month award twice and offered to go to the skills competition.

I am highly passionate about sports, especially track which I have ran for seven years. When I first started, I could barely run a lap. With help of patient and supportive coaches, my determination took me to regionals where I got my first ribbon, and to states where I got my first medal for hurdling. When playing soccer for three years I have learned that I am aggressive and motivated to win and do the best for my coaches and teammates. I also played volleyball for one year and I learned that I am quick on my feet, and I am a reliable teammate and friend. Playing football for one year helped me realize that I am strong and can do anything I set my mind to.

During the summer and breaks I love working at the Good Shepard Family Daycare, where I help prepare food for the children and staff, as well as play with and read to the children. Having a good experience being a waitress at Gino’s gave me the opportunity to learn how to manage my time and remember customers names and orders. It really helped me overcome my fear of being nervous when talking to people and improved my customer service skills. I learned how to be the fastest pizza maker and money counter. My favorite thing to do around my small town of Ravenswood is volunteer to help seniors with chores and yard work as well as people who are disabled. I love seeing them smile when I offer to help them with things that they struggle with such as taking out the trash, moving heavy boxes, planting flowers, and even mowing their lawns. I love to get involved with school activities and my community to bring positivity to others while having fun.

I would like to feel welcome in a supportive and understanding community because all my life I have been a minority. Being mixed in a mostly white town I have had people telling me I’m not white and people telling me I am not black. I have also had men tell me I can’t do certain things because I am a woman. I want to show people that I am not black nor white, but I am a mixed woman and can do anything I set my mind to, and I will do my best to become successful in the near future.

The person I hope to become in the future is a successful underwater welder in the northeast. I would like to be a personal trainer and/or a track coach as well. I would like to take my degrees to have my own gym. I want to be a great leader and hopefully have others follow in my footsteps to better the world.
