I’m sure many can agree that these past couple of years have brought countless obstacles and uncomfortable situations due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. From not being able to see loved ones, to not being able to play sports as competitively as usual, it is challenging times like these where growth opportunities appear. I am making sure to take advantage of these growth opportunities to which I have encountered. For example, I have faced the challenge of switching from a volleyball club I had played with for almost 7 years (Flash 619 VBC), to a new one (Coast VBC). Last season, I played a completely new position as my team has needed me as an outside hitter. Me, a 5’4” player, changing positions from DS/Libero to OH was yet another uncomfortable situation in which I faced. However, I believe a person’s true colors come out in those times of vulnerability and how one responds to unusual circumstances. I believe I rose to the challenge, and worked hard to contribute to my team in any way possible. I like to think that my work ethic led to the accomplishment of being voted by my team to be co-captain at my previous club, as well as last season with my current club! This achievement of mine reminds me that giving 100% effort 100% of the time no matter what, will eventually pay off. Volleyball has become a significant role in my life as it continues to teach me time management, perseverance, and accountability. I have grown to be a vocal leader, a source of encouragement to others, and a hard worker on and off the court. While maintaining a strong GPA, I can stay focused and be self-disciplined on each task handed my way whether it is academic or athletic, always striving to get better in any way possible. During the pandemic, I have come to the realization that I am grateful for such simple things as being surrounded by a great support system I can call my family, having access to an education, and being able to continue playing the sport that I have loved for over 7 years. These times have been anything but normal, however, being in situations out of my comfort zone has ultimately brought me beneficial changes. I enjoy seeing myself consistently grow as a person as a result of passionately putting in the work. That is why it is my goal to pursue an education while continuing to have fun playing volleyball at the collegiate level.
