Personal Statement
My name is Jasmine Yun and I am currently a student at Abraham Lincoln High School, class of 2019. I've been playing volleyball since 3rd grade and I'm passionate about this sport. My primary position is setter. However, I play S/RS on my club team and I'm a starting RS for my high school Varsity team. During the 2015/2016 season, I played all-time setter and right side, running a 6-2, but I also successfully ran a 5-1 (teammate injury). In my 7th and 8th grade year, I received the MVP award as well as athlete of the year award in 8th grade. I'm proud to say that as captain of the team, I was able to bring my middle school team to the Championship game in 2014 (30 years since the school had been to the Championship game). I have been playing on Power Teams for Club and I earned the "Most Improved Player" award on my 12-1 team and on my 13-1 team, I earned the MVP award. In my Freshmen year, I was a starting RS on the Varsity team and we came to a close second at the All City Championship and in my sophomore year, we took the All City Championship title. I received the "Rookie of the Year" award during my Freshmen year. My Junior year, our team made history for the San Francisco Unified School District by winning the Northern California Sectional Championship and advancing to the State Championship, where we ended up as runner ups to the State Champs. As an athlete, I am a team player who is committed and dedicated. I am not afraid to work/train hard to better my skills. I'm always looking for opportunities to learn, which was why I tried out for USAV High Performance in 2016. I made it on the A2 Invitational Team and received intensive training during a week-long program at the University of Colorado. The USAV coaches referred to me as the "dark horse" on the Court due to my athletic ability as I have a high vertical in my jump and power in my hits. People often underestimate me when they see that I am not very tall. I understand that height is a huge factor in this sport. However, skills and talent are also critical. I strength train when I am not on the Court to stay in shape and to maintain endurance.
Academically, I've always maintained above a 3.5 GPA. I am highly motivated and always eager to learn. I work hard to balance school and volleyball so that I can attain my goal to play college volleyball while pursuing a degree at a top academic university. Education is a critical factor in my future and I am taking AP classes to prepare myself for college. In addition, I am also committed to enhancing the community in which we live in through volunteer work as a PAL Cadet. I have participated in many fundraising events with the Special Olympics in San Francisco. I have also volunteered at elderly homes, providing entertainment for them using my musical talent as a piano player. I would like to succeed and I will do any work necessary to achieve my goals. I am very driven and motivated to be a successful student-athlete.
