My name is Hi'ialo (pronounced hee-ee-ahh-low) Apo. I've been playing competitive volleyball for the last seven years. I'll be graduating in 2018 from an all-girls Catholic school in Honolulu.
For the last several years our varsity team has played in the top division in the state. Although we have struggled to remain competitive with the toughest schools, I feel that the struggle has truly influenced who I am and how I play today. I have learned perseverance and determination. My senior year, being co captain, my team and I decided that we were not to dwell on the past but learn from it and grow. This season we were fortunate to enter division two, where we currently have seven wins and four losses. We are entering the state tournament for the first time in six years. My goal for this season was to change record from last year, make it to states, and become the 2017 State Champions. Throughout my entire volleyball career I have learned how to pick myself up and get myself out of a slump. I have learned that it is easy to be excited when my team and I are doing so well but the hard part is to get my team and I back up when we fall short.
My academic goals for high school is to graduate with honors and bring my cumulative GPA up to a 3.8 or higher. For college, my goals are to get into a good school academically and athletically. I want to graduate in four years and to find a major that best fits me. Throughout high school I have learned how important academics are for my future and that good grades and hard work can get me far in life. In college I will keep my grades up and always put school first. I am a “student-athlete” where student and school comes before playing.
