Personal Statement

Being from Hawai‘i, I have learned many lessons and values that have helped me to form my perspective on life. In volleyball, I have learned many Hawaiian values such as aloha (love), malama (to take care), kamau (to persevere), koa (to be brave), and pono (to be righteous). Ever since I was six years old, I learned that in order to achieve success, hard work and perseverance come into play. Throughout the years, I have played many sports (track, tennis, soccer, etc.) but I’ve always focused mostly on volleyball. Volleyball is my passion; always have and always will.  My dream has always been to play at a college level in either D-I, D-II, or D-III. I believe that by working hard and getting the chance to learn at a higher level I will be able to learn new values and skills as well as blend it in within my life.

Throughout the years, I have been constantly attempting to improve my skills in order to achieve what kind of player I’ve always wanted to be. The club team I play for is called Pilipa‘a. The word pilipa‘a means to stand together. I have learned that by working together, my team is able to accomplish anything. We are able to improve our skills as well as the skills of others. I feel that through motivation and goal setting, I am able to better my skills. By constantly pushing myself to the limit and keeping my mindset in check, I have the power to achieve anything.

Going to Kamehameha Schools has taught me how to never give up and push myself to the limit. As Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop once said, “Times will come when you feel you are being pushed into the background. Never allow this to happen-stand always on your own foundation. But you will have to make that foundation. There will come time when to make this stand will be difficult, especially to you of Hawaiian birth; but conquer you can-if you will”. This quote really stands out to me because it tells me that you must always stand up for yourself. It tells me that I am able to do anything if I put my mind and soul into it whether it is academics or volleyball. In college I would like to first major in Biology but also study in Pediatrics. In Hawai‘i, there are not many people in the health and wellness field.  Being able to provide good health care to Hawaiians and other citizens of Hawai‘i would help me to inspire others in Hawai‘i to be in the health and wellness field.

I have realized that throughout my entire life, I have received many blessings from my family, friends, coaches, as well as from my school. Not only am I thankful for the support and guidance they nurture me with, but also with the laughter and many times we share. I would just like to say mahalo (thank you) to everyone that has been apart of life and inspiring me to work hard and follow my dreams.

Aloha and Mahalo,

Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo
