Personal Statement
After playing competitive volleyball for the past six years, I decided to pursue rowing in the fall of my junior year. I joined the novice high school team at Chicago Rowing Foundation's Burr Ridge location (CRF West) in October 2017. Reflecting upon my first spring season, now as a varsity rower, I can honestly say I love this sport.
The long hours and grueling practices, painful erg pieces, and blistered hands are all worth it when you cross the finish line in first place. The competitive drive--and mental and physical strength--that this sport requires has taught me not only to be a better athlete, but a better daughter, sister, teammate, and person overall. Rowing in stern pair (7 seat) for the whole spring season really gave me insight on how to be the leader of a crew and selflessly give and give at each practice and race.
I competed in four regattas my novice year, and placed 2nd in my boat at the Midwest Championship in Bethel, Ohio. The experience I received at these regattas gave me insight as to what collegiate rowing would be like, and I love the atmosphere at these events. I also loved being a part of CRF West's team because it was like a second family to me.
Now that the spring season is over, I am training at the gym, lifting and erging, as well as doing private lessons with my Coach Laura Mikels to learn how to row in a pair. I am excited to improve both my technique and fitness to become the best collegiate recruit I can be.
