Personal Statement

I would like to take a moment to express my desire to attend a University that has an excellent reputation for both its academic and athletic programs. I would like to pursue a career in the field of biological sciences/engineering, environmental science/geology, computer science, or education. While attending college, it is my ambition and desire to compete in college volleyball.

I am looking forward to a fabulous senior year in both the classroom and on the volleyball court at University High School in Normal, IL.  I am 5’11” and weigh 140 pounds.  My primary position is a setter with my secondary position as a right side hitter.  Athletics have always been an important part of my life.  I believe I have an excellent work ethic, am enthusiastic, focused, a team player, coachable, and a leader.  I have shown these character traits by setting the tone of hard work during practices and games, providing fire, perseverance, and encouragement, being accountable to our team, setting goals for myself, and bringing a “go after it” attitude to the court.  In addition, I am extremely responsible and place a great deal of emphasis on academics.  I would welcome the opportunity to highly contribute to your volleyball program by bringing a competitive skill level, leadership, a positive mental attitude, and strong work ethic.

I have also played club volleyball for Illini Elite Volleyball Club in Bloomington, Illinois since 7th grade. I completed our 2015-16 season for the 16U White Elite Team at the end of June at the AAU National Tournament in Orlando, FL.  I was a setter and right side hitter for the 16U White Elite Team and felt I saw a lot of growth during the season.   I competed for the 18 navy expansion team at Illini Elite during the 2016-17 season playing matches against some top competitors such as Sports Performance,  Milwaukee Sting, and St. Louis area clubs . During junior high school I competed in many sports including softball, basketball, volleyball, track, and soccer. In high school, I narrowed my focus to volleyball and basketball, with my main emphasis on volleyball.

Athletics have always been a very important part of my life. I believe I have an excellent work ethic, am enthusiastic, focused, a team player, dedicated, and a leader. I also work hard in the classroom and currently my GPA is a 3.6 on a 4.0 scale.  My ACT composite score is a 26.  Throughout the past three to four years, I have developed a passion for volleyball, which has prompted me to contact you and express my interest.  I believe I would be able to highly contribute to a collegiate volleyball program by bringing in a competitive skill level, leadership, a positive attitude, and a strong work ethic.

I included links to my skills and highlight videos within my profile. I would really appreciate it if you could take time to view them at your convenience. In addition, I am including the links and coaching contacts below to Illini Elite Volleyball Club. The club directors are Andy Erins and Joe Sanders. Please feel free to contact them to gain additional information or answer any questions you may have. I would like to invite you to attend any of our practices and/or tournaments, which are outlined on the Illini Elite website. In addition, I will include the link to our Fall 2017 University High School volleyball schedule, as well as Varsity Coach Mike Bolhuis's contact information.

Coach Mike Bolhuis: cell phone= 1-815-370-1242 e-mail= [email protected].

I have been excitedly researching various colleges and their volleyball programs.  I am pleased to see the dedication of the many coaches to their programs. It is obvious the amount of time and commitment that both coaches and players put forth in their love and passion for the game.  Countless hours are devoted to make a team unified and build a strong foundation.  I would love to be a member of a team with these qualities and to be able to contribute my skill, strong work ethic, hustle, commitment, "fire," enthusiasm, leadership, and passion to make a team complete.  In my opinion, volleyball is the most amazing sport and makes me feel exhilarated each time I step onto the court.

Thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,

Alexis Engst

  • 6 years
  • I have been passionate about volleyball since 4th grade. I began playing in leagues/tournaments, and participating in training sessions and camps in upper elementary school through the present. In each experience I have grown as a player. I have met and worked with so many incredible coaches and athletes through the years and have learned so many life lessons along the way. Volleyball has helped me learn to work well with others toward a common goal, show commitment, determination, set goals, compliment and encourage others, recognize different personalities, and how to bring out the best in everyone, including myself.
