Personal Statement
My name is Zamina Abdullahi and I am a 5'5" junior at UCVTS- UCTech in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. Although I go to a vocational school in Scotch Plains, I play for Rahway High School's varsity volleyball team. I started playing volleyball since the 6th grade and competitive club volleyball since 8th grade. I have been a setter since I started playing this sport. However, during my second year of club I started playing as an opposite hitter, as well. I really enjoy playing both positions!
I played competitive soccer from the ages of 5 to 14. That was my family's whole world; it still is my father's. I feel that this major sports background has granted me with the athleticism that I have today. With sports being a huge figure in my life, I chose to focus on exercise physiology in my high school. Learning the ins and outs of the human body and how it works will let me have a better understanding of what it means to be an athlete.
In my school I am in Spanish Honor Society, HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), and GSA (Gay/Straight Alliance). My teachers would describe as driven, focused, and cooperative. I get along well with everyone because I am good at being objective. On the court, I am quick, motivated, and positive; whenever spirits are downs I try to bring them up.
I love being challenged. Challenges give me a chance to prove myself countless times. At UCTech, I take mostly honors courses, with some others being college level. This season I am thrilled to be the starting setter on the Sureshots VBC 17s team. We already have two 1st place wins in New Jersey and we're working up to a win at regionals this April. Last season, I played up on the Sureshots 17s team as a 16 year old and starting setter. The big thing that I try to gain out of every experience is something new. I love learning and perfecting a skill or talent.
My goal is to play volleyball in college while also furthering my academics and having a healthy social life. I look forward to improving my volleyball skills, gaining valuable experience and knowledge, and forming lifelong friendships. I am in love with traveling, so I'm open to any location. Thank you for your consideration and I anticipate seeing if I could be an acceptable addition for your team.
