Personal Statement

I have always been interested in playing volleyball, starting in third grade when my parents signed me up for a league at the local Boys and Girls Club. It wasn’t until my freshman year that I decided I wanted to play in college.  High school volleyball changed my view of the sport. It wasn’t just a fun game I played anymore; it was a competitive sport that I loved. Volleyball has transformed me into a better leader and teammate. For a long time, I thought that I wasn’t a great volleyball player. When I was voted varsity captain by my teammates sophomore year, it really helped me become more confident in myself on and off the court. My leadership skills were put into play during tough matches and my personality changed for the better. I have set many long and short-term goals for myself. My short-term goals are to graduate at the top of my class with an honors diploma and transfer my college credits to the university I will be attending. My long-term goals are to play volleyball all fours years in college and continue to grow as a leader and teammate.  For a volleyball player, I may be small, but I play big!  I play hard and I always play to win!  I am just as driven in the classroom as I am on the court and have received top academic honors at my school since 7th grade.  I am currently ranked first in my class academically out of 114 students and am enrolled in all college courses this year and was recently inducted into the Orrville National Honor Society.  Outside of school, I have been active throughout my community, performing numerous service projects through Student Council.  Individually, I have taken part in community trash pick-up days, served as a mentor and reader to elementary school students, and served food for Friendship Meals.  I also volunteer at the Orrville Area Boys and Girls Club. Through my church, I have helped elderly friends with house cleaning, gardening and general labor, and have traveled to Mt. Vision, WV on mission trips to bring shoes, Christmas gifts, and play games with needy children of that area.  I truly believe that when a person is blessed in certain areas of his or her life, that person should share those blessings with others, so I try to do that whenever I can.
