Personal Statement

Hello to anyone reading this. From here on, I will speak the truth and nothing but. I am Carla Torres. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is my home. It is where I rejected 9 sports before my parents finally realized I belonged on a volleyball court, and that was before I turned 6 years old. Some facts you should know about me:

-I am competitive (sometimes a bit too much)

- There are very few things I am passionate about, specifically 2 things: God and volleyball, both of which I would give up everything for

-I am a setter, so naturally I am a perfectionist which is...well perfect! I will never be comfortable with a good enough set and that is something to strive for.

- Volleyball has helped me realize that settling is not an option, ever. I want to succeed as bad as I want to breathe in this life, nobody can tell me otherwise.

Anyways, enough facts about me, let's talk about what you really want to get to know. I have a 3.4 GPA, no it is not a lot, but I work hard on it. I take afternoon study sessions with personal tutors when having trouble with some material. I was never in the honor society or in any AP classes because I  have struggled a lot through high school. Obviously, I would love to sit around and watch Netflix all afternoon but that is not ideal for the life I dream of.  My mind is set on being the best I possibly can, not only in the court but in school too. My goal academically is to nurture my mind of the unknown and hope to learn from it.

We all have physical limits that, unfortunately, we cannot control. For example, I am 5'5" but that does not mean I cannot block a 6' foot tall girl, it does not mean I cannot dig and certainly does not limit me in the court. I have been rejected many times because of my height. I was devastated, I felt like I wasn't good enough anymore even though I knew I was. A hundred people can look over me, literally, and say I'm not worth it but it only takes one to see what you're really made of.

What I didn't notice about me is that I am a silent leader (Metaphorically, because I am always screaming in the court). I can be a leader without being called the captain. People follow me on that court. If I do not work, nobody works.  I have a strong character that you don't see in anyone but me because nobody can be me, except me. I chose the hardest position in volleyball and I accepted that challenge a long time ago and I am not giving up now.

I have enough faith in God and in me to know that what is in front of me is greater than what was behind me. I will not let what they say about me destroy my opportunity to be better everyday. Limits and fears are just an illusion. Nobody can talk me out of my dreams, my goals, my aspirations. I am proud to have chosen volleyball. It has made grow into someone I never saw coming with more ambition than a teenager should have. I want to be the best that I can be, I need to be. I hope somebody as passionate as I am about this sport can show me how to be great, how to be phenomenal.

Sincerely,

Your Next Setter

NCSA COLLEGE RECRUITING®

NCSA College Recruiting® (NCSA) is the nation’s leading collegiate recruiting source for more than 500,000 student-athletes and 42,000 college coaches. By taking advantage of this extensive network, more than 92 percent of NCSA verified athletes play at the college level. The network is available to high school student-athletes around the country through valued relationships with the NFLPA, FBU, NFCA and SPIRE. Each year, NCSA educates over 4 million athletes and their parents about the recruiting process through resources on its website, presentations of the critically-acclaimed seminar College Recruiting Simplified, and with Athletes Wanted, the book written by NCSA founder Chris Krause.
