Personal Statement
Hi…my name is Alexandra Janak, but please call me Alex! I hope that after you’ve read my personal statement you will have an idea of who I am and what makes me tick.
I began my volleyball career in 4th grade after retiring from soccer and swimming. I started out playing rec volleyball and then progressed to club volleyball in 5th grade. I became hooked and have never looked back. I’ve played all positions over the years, but was moved to the setter position by my 13’s club coach. At first I hated it!! Like every other player at that age I wanted to be a hitter… I wanted the glory. I am very thankful now that Coach Kristi saw my potential and converted me to a setter. I love to set because it’s challenging, I can contribute to every play and help my hitters shine. I feel a sense of accomplishment every time I produce a set that allows them to make the kill. I believe I am successful as a setter because I read the court well, react quickly, have a high volleyball IQ and have good hands with a soft touch. I’ve also been told by multiple coaches that I have good court demeanor. Between school and club volleyball, I’ve run both a 5-1 and 6-2 offense and am comfortable with both. I prefer a faster tempo and in school volleyball I have gained a lot of experience setting the middles.
My dream now is to continue my volleyball career by playing in college at the highest level possible. My goal is to attend a college with a quality volleyball program and a good reputation in academics. I don’t have any specific schools in mind but would prefer to attend one larger than the size of my high school, which currently has about 2,200 students. I’m also open to many regions but do like the idea of somewhere warm, or at least not too cold! At this time I’m leaning toward a degree in Exercise Science, but that might change after I complete my Anatomy class next year!! I also think I might like to get into coaching.
I would describe myself as outgoing, happy, fun to be around with a good sense of humor, organized, motivated, goal oriented, energetic, athletic, and a rule follower. I smile and laugh a lot and am known for my laugh because it’s contagious. I don’t like drama! At school this year I’m in leadership class. We are in charge of planning and fundraising for homecoming as well as other school activities. I’m also a member of student council and was just selected for membership in the National Honor Society.
When I’m not in school or playing volleyball I enjoy attending concerts and professional sports events, especially Texas Ranger and Dallas Maverick games. I also do volunteer work at church and city functions, such as vacation bible school and festivals. I’m a people person and love to hang out with my friends. We go to the movies, play sand volleyball, eat out, study, have sleepovers and just sit around and talk/laugh. I LOVE massages and pedicures. My favorite healthy food is Honey Crisp apples and my favorite unhealthy foods are nachos and chocolate.
Thank you for taking the time to read my personal statement….I hope to hear from you soon!
