Personal Statement
Hello,
Thank you so much for considering me for your team. My name is Miajavon Coleman pronounced (Me-aw-javon) but I often go by “Mimi.” I have had the pleasure of living overseas for much of my life, which has provided my athletic career with both opportunity and adversity.
My love for volleyball began on a small recreational team in the sixth grade, while living in Misawa, Japan. By many accounts, this is a bit of a late start, but my natural athletic talent quickly catapulted me to the starting lineup. It wasn’t until I moved back to the United States in high school, however, that I began to truly understand and appreciate the fundamental structure and basic skills of the game. Moving around a lot has been difficult, but has also taught me to be coachable, pragmatic and accept constructive criticism. I have also learned to be adaptable to the many different styles of coaching. These are the most important skills that I will bring to your team.
Academically, my goal is to continue to earn high grades on my path to a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and, eventually, a Master’s degree. I hope to utilize my education to advocate for people who can’t speak for themselves. I know that I will be an asset to your program through my competitiveness, dedication and strong team leadership skills. I appreciate your time and hope to see you on the sideline.
