Personal Statement

I started playing volleyball in middle school and I was hooked. I was a multisport athlete back then: volleyball, track, swimming and field hockey.  During my freshman year, I was asked to try out for U-Turn, a travel team. Since playing on that team, volleyball has been my one and only passion. My parents say I eat, breathe and sleep volleyball. In fact, I drag them or my friends outside with me to practice every chance I get, take a volleyball wherever I go, and have a spike trainer to practice when I can’t talk anyone into practicing with me.  I’m always asking my coach if we can practice a little longer to work more on skills we didn’t get to in practice. I’ve attended some VCU matches and enjoy trying to incorporate some of the things I have seen into practice time with my team. I am currently playing for Richmond Volleyball Club for the second year and will continue my participation with ELKINS Sports Performance for additional conditioning.
During high school season, I play OSH and play all the way around and have been able to gain solid back row skills.  This year on my club team, I am playing Defensive Specialist/Libero. I think it’s important to be a consistent, versatile all-around player.  I ask for advice and critiques from my coaches in order to improve my form and consistency and take private lessons when I can.  Athletically speaking, I am physically strong and coachable.
I have a strong work ethic both on and off the court.  I am involved with DECA and BETA club as well as working part time as a cashier at a local grocery store.  I enjoy the service aspects of those clubs. I have also volunteered time teaching basic volleyball skills to elementary school aged children.  My busy schedule has definitely taught me to effectively manage my time!  Time management is an important aspect of success.
I have become increasingly focused on my grades throughout high school and I continue to focus on my grades and am taking more challenging classes as well.  I hope to major in business management in college with a goal of resort management/ownership as a career.  Academic success is very important to me but I also can’t imagine my college years without volleyball so I am looking for the perfect blend of academics and volleyball.
