Personal Statement

I am Meagan McDonald a Junior at Middleburg Academy.  I'm a multi-sport athlete who is looking to play volleyball at a competitive level in college.  I am a six rotation outside hitter on my club and HS team who is seen as a difference maker on the court.

I started playing sports in Kindergarten with softball and basketball.  I played softball until sixth grade when volleyball came into the picture.  I played co-ed basketball starting in Kindergarten and was looking to continue playing in college but my love for volleyball took over.  I continue to play basketball for my HS team but have since given up playing AAU.

My volleyball career started in fifth grade when my mom and sister volunteered to coach a team so I could play a year early.  I played in middle school and then joined Virginia Elite on a 13's team.  I fell in love with the sport.  I have been fortunate and have had excellent coaches that helped me develop as an all-around six rotation player.

This past HS season was very exciting as we won the VISAA Division 2 state championship finishing our season 30-2.  This was extremely impressive when you understand the size of our school.  Our HS has about 135 student and our Varsity team was comprised of 9 players with two freshman who luckily came in and had a huge impact.  On our small team, creativity and exceptional serve receive is key to winning.  Our coach runs a fast creative offense that often has us attacking from multiple positions on the floor.  We played much of our season against teams at the Division 1 level even though technically for our school's size we should have be playing D3.  The most exciting games were beating Flint Hill in our home gym on a very hot afternoon without air conditioning, and then again in their home gym to win their Tournament.  Flint Hill went on to win the state championship for VISAA Division 1.  I was named tournament MVP.  We also played some tough matches against another rival Fredericksburg Christian.  They gave us one of our losses for the season but we won against them two other times to include their tournament where I was named all tournament team.

For the second year I was named First team All-State.  I also received recognition from the Washington post.  I love playing for my HS.  My club team this year is very talented and we are playing well.

My desire to play sports comes from years of watching and attending sporting events with my cousins.  I come from a very athletic sports minded family.  I have three cousins who played college football, UNC-Chapel Hill, Maryland and Wake Forest.  For as long as I can remember I was traveling to college campuses going to games.  We went to many bowl games including the Orange Bowl.  When my one cousin was drafted into the NFL we went to NYC for the draft.  The experience of continuing to play and represent my school while getting an education in the field that I desire is important to me.

I'm a strong student who works hard to balance academics and sports.  I'm looking for the right college that will give me the balance of competitive volleyball and strong academics.

I am scheduled to take the ACT in June.
