Personal Statement

My name is McClayne Erickson, but everyone calls me Laynie. If there is one thing that sets me apart from most kids my age, it’s my ability to work. I’m happiest when I’m doing productive things. Since Freshman year I’ve been a three sport varsity athlete. I've played club volleyball and basketball, and have maintained a 3.85 grade point average. I am also a member of the National Honor Society.

The value of hard work was instilled in me when I was young. I’ve watched as my parents have been active in our community, and service is important in our family. I’m a member of La Center United, a local community action group that helps educate and prevent substance abuse in our community. I’ve organized multiple charity drives for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon in order to help the children there. Faith is also an important part of my life, and I have been able to serve in many ways through my church youth group as well.

Leadership is also something that is very important to me. I have served as class president both Freshman and Sophomore year and have been actively involved in Leadership class since middle school. Through my experience in American Student Body, I’ve learned to be a better public speaker. This, combined with my love of sports is why I want to pursue a career in sports broadcasting. Learning to speak in front of people has been especially challenging for me. After a seizure when I was a toddler, I lost the ability to speak. Through years of speech therapy and hard work, I regained my verbal skills and also overcame the speech impediment that resulted.

The ability to work has been something that has influenced my volleyball experience greatly. If you talk to any of my coaches I think my work ethic would be one of the top things they would say about me. I’m incredibly competitive and a gamer by nature. I like to win, and I know that hard work at practice is how that happens. I’ve also learned through volleyball how to play smart. As a 5’10 outside hitter I am constantly going up against big blocks. I’ve learned the importance of adjusting, placement, and using a variety of shots to get the kill.

I love sports and I think they are important. I believe volleyball, and the other sports I have played have made me a better person. I have learned to be a better teammate and friend, quicker thinker, and how to push myself. These skills have carried over in all aspects of my life and I am so grateful for sports and what they have added to my life.

NCSA COLLEGE RECRUITING®

NCSA College Recruiting® (NCSA) is the nation’s leading collegiate recruiting source for more than 500,000 student-athletes and 42,000 college coaches. By taking advantage of this extensive network, more than 92 percent of NCSA verified athletes play at the college level. The network is available to high school student-athletes around the country through valued relationships with the NFLPA, FBU, NFCA and SPIRE. Each year, NCSA educates over 4 million athletes and their parents about the recruiting process through resources on its website, presentations of the critically-acclaimed seminar College Recruiting Simplified, and with Athletes Wanted, the book written by NCSA founder Chris Krause.
