Growing up on Hawkeye ct., there were a dozen kids all within my age range. Most summer nights were spent getting eaten by mosquitoes. Most of the time, we didn't even notice the annoyingly itchy bites, until bedtime because we were having so much fun in the moment. Having so many neighbors was influential for two reasons. First, I was able to try out so many sports I normally wouldn’t have even attempted; for example, soccer, tennis, skateboarding, baseball, nerf gun wars (I know that's not a sport, but those wars got really intense), kickball, and several more. Second, I was able to truly discover my competitive side because when you are little and play against the big kids, they doubt you a ton, and let’s just say I loved proving the big kids wrong.
In fourth grade, I discovered volleyball, and I instantly fell in love. I loved the pace of the game, the aggressiveness, and the team aspect. Obviously, the game wasn't fast at first, it was actually quite slow. The dream of one days being able to hit, and rally back in forth, was the drive I needed to keep playing. Another thing volleyball has taught me is the characteristic of dependence. I have always been independent and a problem solver; however, through volleyball, I have gained an understanding on the importance of being able to depend on your team.
If I was given an opportunity to play at the next level, not only would I be able to exhibit my competitiveness, but I would also be able to strive for athletic and academic excellence, and achieve a successful future. Therefore, finally proving the big kids from Hawkeye ct. wrong.
