Personal Statement
I have been playing water polo for five years. My friend wanted me to play in 7th grade with her so I decided that it would be fun. Water polo has definitely lived up to the expectation of being fun! When playing water polo I have been fortunate enough to mature in the way that I interact with people. I always establish good relationships with the people on my team. I never want to ignore someone just because someone else on the team isn’t fond of them. If someone isn’t liked on the team I strive to make them feel like part of the team. During practice I generate a good vibe within the pool. Some practices just seem long and boring sometimes but if you bring an encouraging and bright mentality to the pool deck the practice gets ten times more fun. At the beginning of the season the team is given the opportunity to pick two people they want as a team captain. My sophomore year I wasn’t selected by my team, instead my coaches pulled me to the side and told me that they wanted me to be a captain because I knew the game and had good leadership skills. They also told me that they wanted me as a captain because I was very coachable and I was able to communicate what they wanted to the team. My sophomore year I was also fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to be moved up to varsity for their playoffs. I believe that I was moved up to varsity because I give all of the effort that I can give every practice and every game. I consider giving all of the effort you can possibly give to be the only way to improve and be a good, strong person- in and out of the water.
If I am ever fortunate enough to have free time, which doesn’t happen very often, I volunteer at the local animal shelter. I also donate blood. I do my best to donate every eight weeks. In other parts of my spare time I enjoy participating with my school’s theater program. I like to do behind the scenes work to include stage managing. As a stage manager I am in control of all of the crew members. This alone has improved my leadership skills significantly. Water polo is always my number one. If there is a theater event and a water polo event happening at the same time, I always choose water polo over everything. I constantly find myself wanting to improve and finding ways to support others to improve as well.
Academically I pride myself with being pro-active with homework, not waiting until the last minute. I would like to become an Equine Vet. In order to get a jump on this goal, I took two science classes my junior year and will be taking veterinary science this year. My good study habits are very important to be able juggle my school work, theater interests and most importantly Water Polo.
