Personal Statement
I have been playing water polo for over four years and competitively swimming since before I could walk. Water polo has become such a huge part of my life and I could not be more proud, committed, or enthusiastic to be a part of the lifestyle that encompasses it. I began playing on Anteater Water Polo, a small club team that was convenient but not necessarily the most competitive. Because the girls team was so small, I learned how to play polo with boys. Playing against boys, I figured out how to compete against bigger and stronger opponents - using my speed and dexterity to my advantage. This is probably the defining thing about my water polo career: I may not be the classic 170 pound set player, but I have learned how to adapt to any part and handle it with ease. I have played every position in the pool. My freshman year of high school (and my 3rd year playing polo) I played as the Varsity Goalie (splitting the cage with a senior), and sophomore year adapted back to field. This year, my Junior year, I will be playing field again. Along with water polo and swim, I enjoy surfing, bodysurfing, running, and lifeguarding. This summer, I took a challenge and successfully became a California State Lifeguard. Lifeguard training has been one of the most testing experiences I have ever gone through, and has taught me so much about myself as a person and athlete. I now understand that I can accomplish nearly anything that I push myself to do physically, whether it be waking up at 4:30 every morning for a week straight to work out for nearly 5 hours a day, sit in the classroom and excel as a student, and then be tested on all of my skills (both physically and mentally) in the afternoon. Lifeguarding has opened my eyes to something I would be very interested in doing as a career - firefighting and general emergency response. I hope to keep in shape throughout college in order to become a firefighter after.
