Personal Statement
My name is Kathryn McCullough, and I love being in the water. I was a competitive swimmer for four years, and when I was ten years old, I joined the Rose Bowl Water Polo Club team. My experiences on this team have opened my eyes to a whole new side of myself.
When I began to play water polo, I found new skills and strength. My self confidence grew as well as my drive to be the best. I had finally found a sport that I was excited about. It was a whole different side of me that I hadn't discovered yet, and I was inspired to keep working.
Water polo has challenged me mentally in many ways. While playing in a game, I have learned to stay humble and at the same time to stay confident in myself and my team. If I miss a shot, I can't get down on myself, I have to use that as motivation during my next opportunity. If I do make the shot, I can't become too over confident. I have realized that I must remain level headed no matter what the score.
I am currently going into my junior year in high school, and have been playing water polo for almost 8 years. I love the sport now more than ever, and I want to play at the collegiate level, with a team that I can consider like my family. Since I am a student-athlete, I have learned to balance academics and athletics, and enjoy challenging myself in both areas. I am very driven, and work hard to maintain my GPA, and at the same time, improve in my sport. I know I can be a solid contributor to my college team, and I am excited to see where the recruiting process takes me.
