Personal Statement
I started my journey into wrestling at the age of 12 years old and five years later I am still looking to further my career into college. I earned the opportunity to wrestle at the varsity level as an freshmen on my high school wrestling team. I have continued to wrestle varsity sophomore and junior year. After transitioning from middle school to high school I realized the importance of dedicating my self to the sport and that I needed to take wrestling much more serious. I then started training with Randy Simpsons Elite Freestyle and Greco Roman team, as well as various camps, and private lessons. As my leadership role on my team has expanded, I have come to realize the importance of helping with your teammates and being there to push them to work harder, ultimately improving the team as a whole, myself included.
I understand the primary responsibility of a student athlete is to be a student. As I have gone through school, like wrestling, I have realized that my education is one of the most important things in my life. In the world today and the occupation that I someday hope to go into will require a college degree. Unfortunately, at a young age I was faced with a serious problem, being that I was diagnosed with a learning disability. I do not want to use that as an excuse because I still try my very hardest to keep my grades up. Especially within these past few years I am trying do everything possible to not only do better in school but to be a better student. I have recently started working with a private tutor to assist with my school work. With that, earning my college degree is something that I look forward to and want to pursue and I think that wrestling could be what helps me get there.
A good portion of my time is usually spent on either school or wrestling; although, I do find the time to participate in some activities other than wrestling. Since getting my driver's license I look for seasonal employment during the summer. In order, to supplement my wrestling I also began to train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and MMA at a local academy. I also started competing in Jiu-Jitsu, and after putting my skills to the test I have won various tournaments around the country and am currently ranked 11th in the world by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation. I frequently assist the coaches of the youth wrestling program that is hosted in my school district. Off the mats, I have volunteered at a local residential care center for the elderly performing some of the necessary daily tasks. I recently assisted with a benefit for the Helping Hands Learning Center, a local school for children with mental disabilities. I am looking forward to the community service opportunities that will arise while I am in college.
