Hello, my name is Alejandro Soto II and playing competitive sports all of my life has taught me key life skills. It has taught me the power of teamwork, the ability to inspire others through leadership and how to overcome challenges.
My passion for baseball and other activities grew at an early age from the thrill of competing and the interacting with my friends and teammates. My mother is the hardest working person I’ve ever seen and she competes everyday to be the best in her profession. My father loves to coach and teach and his passion shows through everyday with his students. Both have been instrumental in my growth as a student-athlete.
I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of a competitive successful baseball program at Benicia HS. As a sophomore, I made the varsity squad and knew I would be starting the year as a backup to a senior catcher heading to a DI school after graduation. This situation could have easily frustrated me and kept me from working hard to be the best teammate I could be. Instead, I used this opportunity to work harder in practice, to support my teammates to the best of my abilities and to be prepared for whenever I got my chance to play. We won the State Sectional Title that year and it was a wonderful feeling I was able to share with my teammates, coaches and family.
One of my biggest life lessons thus far has actually been off the field. I lost my focus academically during my junior year and struggled to live up to my potential. This summer after seeing my transcript and having time to reflect over the past school year has been very humbling. It is overcoming these types of challenges that really shape who we are and what we become. This experience has helped me refocus and put my competitive spirit into full gear moving into my senior year. This is the next stage in my preparation for the challenges of college.
The future for me includes a college baseball program that will be a good fit for me athletically as well as allow me to showcase my potential academically. I believe I not only have the talent as a well rounded athlete to compete for a college team, but have learned from some challenging situations in my life that I can use to bring my leadership, passion and perseverance to make an immediate impact on your program.
