My name is Tanner Martinez, I am 6’0” 170 lbs. I have a strong work ethic and a love of the game. I have been a part of the varsity team since 6th grade. I would say this has helped me become a student of the game. I didn’t play as much as a 6th and 7th grader so I was able to learn and grow from the senior catchers as well as my coaches outside of school. As a freshman and sophomore I was the starting catcher and led my team to two district championships. With the position I play I see myself as a leader. As a catcher I am the captain of the field, I see everything that goes on and in a way direct traffic. Through my knowledge of the game I know where my teammates should be in various situations and with different batters, so if they’re not in the right spot I help them get there. I think, however, my leadership goes beyond that. I not only try to educate my team, but I try to “Keep them in their heads,” as I have learned that when we are not thinking right we can’t put forth our best performance. I also pride myself on being a hard worker. I feel that part of being a leader is to lead through actions and by working hard I am able to do just that. I also endeavor to do my best off the field as well such as in school. My family has always valued grades and a good education which has led me to apply my best efforts in my schoolwork. I am proud to be a member of the National Honor Society and always strive for the “A.” Community service is also important to me. Some of those hours have been spent working on the upkeep and improvement of the school baseball fields.
