Personal Statement
My name is Tams Mullins, and I attend Cherokee High School in Canton, GA. I was born in Louisiana, lived in Texas for 5 years, and now live in Georgia. From living in three states, I have made a lot of friends. Whether it be from baseball or from school, there are a few I have keep in touch with no matter how far apart we are. Those friends are the ones I know will always be there when I need them. I am also very close to my parents and grandparents; they have always given me the confidence that I can achieve anything I set my mind to. They have sacrificed a lot to provide me the opportunities to achieve my goals and have also shown me what it means to have faith and to be thankful for the blessings God has given me. Without my faith in God, family, and friends, I would not be the person I am today.
When I was younger, I played football, basketball, and baseball. While I enjoyed playing these sports during their season, baseball could never come fast enough. My Dad loved the sport even though he was a basketball player, and this is where my passion for the game was ignited. He wanted to see Yankee Stadium (the one Ruth built) before it was torn down, and my mom bought tickets as a Father’s Day gift. This started a Stadium tour of all 30 parks, and what an incredible experience that has been!
The one thing about baseball I love the most is that it is a team sport, but everyone on the field must do their own job for the team to succeed. The sport has taught me to look forward and to continue to work hard. Many say it is a game of failure, but I feel it is a game of opportunity of what may be. The next pitch is the only pitch that matters. When I moved to Georgia, the biggest challenge I faced was that no one knew me, travel teams already had their rosters, and many were not looking to mix up the chemistry. This caused me to work harder, so I was able to elevate my play to show coaches my true potential and overcome this obstacle.
I am very mature for my age, and I do not let many things bother me. Whether it be an error in the field or a hit that I gave up, I have learned to remain focused and move on to the next pitch. Baseball has also taught me patience and perseverance. I have learned that I can’t change one thing and expect immediate results, and therefore I need to continually work on skills and abilities to become the best player I can be and strive for excellence.
In high school, my goal is to finish within the top 10 in my class with a 4.0 GPA. Academics are very important to me because I know that it will allow me to have a stable and successful career. I’d like to attend a college with a strong academic background in Engineering or Business so that I can prepare myself for life after baseball.
