Hi, my name is Gabe Mercer. I have been playing baseball since 2013, when I was four years old. I played rec ball at Mt. Paran North Church from then until the fall of 2020, when the league's all-star team turned into the travel team that I played on for 3 years. We were called the Mount Paran Blue Angels, and we were a high triple-A, minor, or low major team.
When that team parted ways, I joined Blaze Baseball, in Acworth, GA. Blaze is led by former pro player Matt Gonzalez and is focused on the development of players.
I also recently transferred high schools and made it on the varsity baseball team at Dominion Christian School, in Marietta, GA.
I have played almost every position, though I mainly play center field and left field. I am a great leader, a fast learner, and an encouraging teammate. I have been leading off almost every game recently, and I get on base or make good contact almost every at-bat. I am an aggressive player, both in the field and hitting. When at bat, I love to hit the first pitch if it's a fastball in a good spot. Regarding fielding, I always put my body on the line and sell out to make a play.
I asked a previous club team coach (Jimmy Fowlkes) to comment on me as a player, for this section, and he said: “Gabe Mercer is one of those players that is a joy to coach. He’s always the first player to arrive and the last to leave practice. He has a great knowledge of the game of baseball, hustles all the time, and leads by example on the field.” Those words mean a lot to me, especially coming from a coach who played college baseball (at Georgia State University) and has coached high school baseball for more than 30 years.
I am a very disciplined individual. On my own initiative, I work out five days a week in addition to baseball practice, including sprints, bench press, curls, dead hangs, pull-ups, push-ups- squats, sit-ups, and wrist curls.
I have a strong Christian family, and I have known God since I was four. We go to church as a family every Sunday that I don't have a baseball game that conflicts with it, and I am currently getting plugged into a youth group with some of my teammates. I am a straight A student and push myself to the highest level. For example: Last year, I memorized 500 digits of Pi for a bet with one of my teachers. I am considering a degree in engineering—or a mathematics degree of some sort. I will probably also minor in business.
I like to spend time outdoors, whether that's exploring the woods behind my house, playing whiffle ball with my friends, or going on a long bike ride.
