Personal Statement
Hi, my name is Cole Smith, and it is my hope to play college baseball while pursuing a degree in kinesiology or science (or something in a related field).
My primarly positions are SS and 2nd baseball, though I also pitch for some of my club teams. I am currently on 3 different baseball teams, South Central All Stars (AAA miget), Pembina Valley Orioles (MBJL), and the Manitoba Youth Selects provincial baseball
team. The PV Orioles is in a league that contains players ages 21 and under. At the age of sixteen, it is a privilege to play in such a competitive league, and I believe it has prepared me for a high level of baseball. It is also an honor to have made the provincial team (years 1993 and 1994).
Though I love baseball, I also realize that academics is a very important component to being a well rounded athelete. Throughout highschool, I have maintained I high academic standard, averaging 92.12 percent. It is also my intent to take to ACT later this fall, which I have already begun to study for. I am also involved in many school functions, and am one of next year's co-presidents, in a student body of over 1200.
I play hockey and run cross country as well. Last year in hockey, I was assistant captain of the team, and ended up finishing 7th in points with 43 after league play and was awarded with the most sportsmanlike award, amassing 0 penalty miniutes in 23 games (though don't think I won it because I'm afraid to take it hit or work hard). In my first year of cross country I did very well, and was a part of a team that had the best finish our high school has ever had, placing 3rd in provincials.
I am open to go to any school. Location does not matter, and size is not a factor either. I am interested in any division of baseball in NCAA, and the NAIA also appeals to me. I am also completely ok with going to a 4 year school and simply practicing with the baseball team for my freshman year. The most important thing to me is whether or not the university or college has the degree I want to pursue (Science, Kinesiology). It is my hope to play competitive baseball while recieving a good education, where ever it may be.
