Personal Statement
I’m a 2021 graduate and attend Andover High School, located 20 miles north of Boston. AHS has 1,800 students and is considered one of the top public school districts in Massachusetts. It is known for its tough grading, high standardized test scores, and its accomplished athletic record across all sports. AHS participates in division 1 sports in one of, if not, the most competitive divisions in Massachusetts. I played varsity hockey and am currently playing varsity baseball.
My goal since beginning baseball was to play at the next level. In middle school, I wanted to play for the high school team. My goal was to make the varsity team as a sophomore. Not only did I make the team, but have been the starting 1st baseman and batting 5th/6th behind all seniors. With the large number of students, it is highly unusual for a sophomore to make the team no less be a starter.
I consider myself a ‘tough’ player. Growing up in New England you need to be prepared to play your HS season in cold, raw, and rainy conditions. I bring a positive attitude and a smile to every practice and game, no matter if it’s sunny and 75 or rainy and 45. I’m most proud of the fact that since I began playing organized baseball (around age 8 or 9), I’ve never missed a game or practice because of injury, illness, or just because I didn’t feel like going. I remember when I was very young saying to my parents, “I don’t want to go to practice today.” They told me that was fine, but we needed to go and let the coach know that I wouldn’t be playing any longer. I learned a life lesson that day, if you are part of a team or group you need to be 100% committed in everything you do and be a leader whether you are the best or worst player. Now I don’t worry about being the best player on the team, I strive to be the hardest worker and to lead by that example.
Now as a sophomore, I'm beginning to think about playing at the college level. I know that I have the work ethic to succeed in both the classroom and the playing field. I haven’t taken the SAT’s yet, but have been working with a tutor for a few months. In a prep test, with my tutor, I scored a 1,280 (660 math, 620 english). My tutor expects an improvement of 100-150 points by the end my junior year.
My goal is to attend a college that is highly regarded in accounting/business, finance, or economics and provide me with the ability to play at a competitive level. I’m confident that I can be a student athlete that will succeed on both fronts.
