Personal Statement
I first became interested in baseball because of my dad. After playing at Nevada, he played at the highest level he could in the minors, AAA for the Dodgers’ organization. His jersey, pictures and baseball cards were on display around the house. He instilled in me the love for the game of baseball and taught me everything he knows about the game. Having him as a coach through my little league years, as well as being the “coach’s kid,” really influenced me to become a leader on many of the teams I’ve played for. Although I might not be very vocal off the field, I talk a lot on the field, and lead by example. I show what is to be expected of teammates, how you represent yourself and the team on and off the field, and how you should play the game with hustle and heart.
Through baseball, especially in the past few years with my high school team, I’ve learned the values of teamwork, dedication, and commitment, and that without these values the team will not succeed. While on JV my sophomore year, when our Varsity Team did not make it to the playoffs, I observed it was because of a lack of respect for each other and for the game. It seemed not one of them wanted to play for each other or for the team like a true brotherhood. Witnessing this behavior inspired me to not let my future teams to act as they did.
I’m looking for a program that is a good fit academically as well as it is athletically. As a 4.0 student-athlete, I want to challenge myself in and out of the classroom. This is an obstacle that I have overcome through hard work and perseverance over the past three years, balancing homework for four AP classes and one honors class all while having practice for 2.5-3 hours after school every day. Another obstacle that I seem to have overcome is proving myself to new coaches. In my high school career (including summer baseball for my high school program) I have had to prove myself to seven different coaches who had not seen me play before. I have proven that I am a valuable player, and can be counted on at any position, moving from short stop to second, to third and most recently, first base.
As a kid with an incredible work-ethic, determination, and commitment to the game and academics, I believe that I have the talent to compete for a college program and would be an asset to any team with the same core values.
