Personal Statement
I have been playing baseball since I was four years old. Originally, I split my time between baseball and soccer, before deciding that baseball was my one true love, athletically speaking. In addition to playing for my middle school team I play for travel teams, which train year round. It is a big commitment. but I also enjoy sailing, golf, snowboarding and swimming. I believe that any cross training is good for you.
However, I think people are more interesting if they have more than one “true love”, and my second great interest is music. I am a classically trained violinist, playing since I was eight with a youth orchestra, in addition to my middle school and high school orchestras, following in my brother’s footsteps. With the youth orchestra I have performed at Lincoln Center five times. I also play electric guitar on my own.
People comment to me that this is a strange combination, but I disagree. There are a great many similarities between baseball and music, if you think about it. Baseball is a sport that requires everyone to play as one in the field, just as an orchestra must play as one under the guidance of the conductor. People doing their own thing, either on the field or in an orchestra, will bring disaster to the game or the performance. However, baseball also provides individuals the ability to distinguish themselves on offense, as everyone bats. Same as playing guitar. At that time you are on your own, with the spotlight exclusively on you, although in baseball you are still playing for the team.
Both music and baseball require a lot of dedication and training to excel, and I hope to continue to do both at a high level in high school and college.
