  • This weekend was supposed to be an off-weekend. We decided to play in a tune-up tournament. The quality of the competition was very mediocre. I missed the Friday game due to completing my week at Sr. High church youth camp in Columbus. I played in the Saturday game and two games on Sunday. We only faced two quality pitchers. We run-ruled all 4 teams we played, including the championship. In the Saturday game (facing the first quality pitcher), I went 0-2 with 1 walk, run scored, and moved runners into scoring position by grounding to the right side. In the first game (semi-final) on Sunday, I went 0-1 w/2 walks and 2 runs scored. In the final game (championship- against the 2nd quality pitcher), I went 1-2 w/a walk and 1 run scored. In the field during the tournament, I fielded 5-6 chances (w/1 error- the infield was awful). Also, I was involved in turning 2 double plays during the tournament. I played both SS and 2B. Again, the tournament field and competition was not of high quality, but we played well as a team. So far offensively, in 4 tournaments, I am 6-14, 2 doubles, 6 R, 4 RBI, 4 BB, and OBP of .714. In the field, I have played 2B & SS, handling 18 total chances with only 2 errors (both at SS) with 12 assists and contributed to 5 double plays at both at SS & 2B (including 5 unassisted PO's).

  • Buckeye Elite Baseball Tournament

  • We finished 2-2 in a very competitive summer tournament in the Columbus, Ohio area. This was our last tournament scheduled for the summer. We had won the previous 2 tournaments. Unfortunately, we had several players who were absent for parts of the tournament due to vacation and other obligations (including me- I was on a mission's trip to Columbia for 8 days). I was not present for the two Thursday games, which we won both games. The Friday game, we lost 9-6 to a very good team (where we had 1 bad inning; gave up 7 runs). In the final two innings, we had chances to tie or take the lead and could not get the big hit. At the plate, I went 0-1 with 3 walks and 2 runs scored. In the field, I played SS and handled 6 chances, helped turn 1 DP (should have had a 2nd one), and unfortunately committed 1 ER. Honestly, I was a little rusty from being gone for over a week, and I had not practiced or played in a game in 10 days. Also, I pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief giving up 2 hits, no BB, and I ER. I was able to strike out 3. On Saturday, we played a very good team from Pittsburgh and unfortunately lost 5-2. I was 1-3 with 1 R and 1 RBI. In the field, I did not field any chances. We were down 1-0 in a pitcher's duel, until in the top of the 6th with a runner at 2nd, I hit a single, that scored the tying run. Eventually, we went ahead 2-1 going into the bottom of the 6th. The other team scored 4 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th, which was the final difference. So, while the end result was disappointing, we played 4 good teams and were able to beat 2 of them, and we were in position to win the other 2 games with some timely hitting and pitching. For the summer, at the plate, I finished 7-18 with a .389 BA. Also, I had 2 doubles, 7 BB, 9 R, 5 RBI, and an OBP of .560. Also, in the field, I had a total of 24 chances, 17 assists, 3 errors, and a fielding % of .880 (playing 2B, SS, 3B, and P).

  • Lipscomb University Prospect Camp

  • I went on a college visit on Friday, September 20, 2019 to Lipscomb University. The visit was great. I got to tour the Engineering and Science buildings, meet w/several professors, sit in on an engineering class, and take a very complete tour of the campus and athletic facilities. I really enjoyed talking with the professors, especially those teaching Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (which is what my future major is going to be). After the visit, I participated in a two day prospect camp at Dugan Field. The camp went very well. Friday night, it was a combination of pro style workout with both extensive defensive instruction and practice with some additional hitting drills. The players were very involved and worked with their small groups, giving great advice, instruction, and encouragement. The second day, on Saturday, we played 2 games where we got to play in our primary positions. I got to play 3B, 2B, & SS (I also played some outfield). I fielded 5 total tries and had no errors. And I was given very good feedback that I was very fundamentally sound and my mechanics were solid. Offensively, I had a very good camp. In the games, I went 3-4 with three singles. The final at bat was against the best pitcher I faced (he was throwing low 80's w/a good curve and solid slider). I was able to hit a hanging slider for a rope to right center (just like I have been working all fall). So, I was very satisfied at my performance against good competition. Overall, the players and coaches gave me positive feedback. Finally, I got to talk w/another baseball player who was also a Mechanical Engineering student. We talked about the program in general, the expectations, difficulty of balancing academics with athletics, and overall culture of the program. I really appreciated his perspective.

  • Crossroads Fall League (Southwest Ohio)

  • Played 8 total games over the course of about a month. The competition was somewhat mediocre. The best part of the experience was working on things, both offensively and defensively, I have been training on my own. I thought over the late summer and early fall, I have made big improvements in my defensive fundamentals, throwing mechanics, and general consistency. Offensively, I have been working on my stretch, timing, and lower half explosion. Also, I have been receiving hitting training from Coach Rick Gold, an assistant coach at Wittenberg University, all summer and fall. The hard work has started to pay off with hitting the ball more square with greater consistency of extension. I feel like I have made huge improvements in hitting the ball with more violence, power, and velocity. In the meantime, I have been working out at my HS (Northmont Senior HS) 5 days a week with our strength coach and 3-4 days a week w/a personal trainer, focused on agility, stretching, core, plyos, and explosive movements and speed. Since beginning the workouts in July, I have continued to set personal bests in all my lifts, speed and agility drills, stretching tests, and have gained 8 lbs of muscle. I am now 5'10 1/4" and 182 lbs (up from 5'10" and 174 lbs at the beginning of June). The hard work has paid off in personal workouts, open fields at our HS, the fall league, and prospect camps.

  • Sinclair Community College Prospect Camp

  • I was really looking forward to participating in a camp where a lot of the players I knew from HS and summer ball. Also, I excited about playing on Grady Field in Xenia (Athletes in Action Campus). But due to some logistical issues, we were forced to hold the camp in Sinclair's Fieldhouse. The camp was well attended and capped at around 50 players. Again, we started with a pro workout evaluation. I ran pretty well, but again, the indoor surface was not great for turf shoes. I should have wore my basketball shoes for the camp. So, I know I could run a faster time on a different surface. Defensively, again, I believe I performed well. The indoor surface and slight dimness of the fieldhouse made it slightly difficult to pick up the ball and its spin. But I fielded everything and threw pretty well. I believe my throwing velocity was 82-84. In the hitting stations, we got to hit soft toss and overhand, as well as take exit velocity off a tee. I believe my best exit velocity was 85. So, I was satisfied because my throwing velocity has come up in the last month by 1-2 mph consistently. And my exit velocity has consistently come up 2-3 mph. So, my strength training and core work is paying off in the last 3 months. In live hitting rounds, we participated in simulated games and situations. I hit very well against solid pitching. The pitching was not near as good as Headfirst or Showball, and not quite as good as Taylor's camp, but it was challenging (especially due to the background and lighting). I did have 3 AB's and all were high quality. I had 1 HR, 1 deep flyout, and 1 AB that ended due to time limit after multiple foul balls. Overall, it was a good experience. I continued to play great defense from a fundamental and mechanics point of view. And I felt my AB's exhibited good pitch selection and improved swing mechanics and power. I am looking forward to fall ball (live pitching and game situations) and upcoming prospect camps.

  • The camp featured a lot of Indiana and Michigan prospects and not too many Ohio players. We participated in a pro evaluation workout. Also, we got to field and hit in live situations on their home field. Additionally, we completed several indoor hitting drills against both live pitching and machine. The camp was a good experience. I felt my performance was solid but not outstanding. I think I performed well defensively, which has become a consistency for me. I still need to work on throwing velocity. In the hitting drills, I set my personal best in exit velocity at 86.7. So, I was happy about that. I ran okay but the surface (due to some rain) was a little slick. The coaches were very complimentary of my hitting in the indoor cages/drills. I reached to the coaching staff to ask about coming back to workout with the team this fall. I am waiting on a confirmation.

  • This showcase camp, like Headfirst, was a very competitive and challenging camp. The talent was very deep and competitive. Also like Headfirst, there were a lot of coaches interacting with us all the time. I liked the personal interaction through drills, the pro evaluation, and the dugout time during games. I thought the pitching overall/depth was not quite as good as Headfirst, but it was still very challenging. During the camp, I continued to play very well defensively. I believe in both camps combined, I fielded 14 of 14 chances with no errors. At Showball, I played exclusively at 2B. As for hitting, I again started slowly, trying to get comfortable and adjusted to the live game modified rules. It was just very hard to adjust when you didn't know the pitcher (or his stuff), had to almost swing at everything (big strike zone), and the pitching was challenging. I felt, like Headfirst, I got off to a slow start, but by the 2nd game, I was much more comfortable and aggressive. I was very happy how I finished the camp, especially in the last game. I went 1-3 with 2 walks and a very lengthy at bat where I fouled off about 6-7 pitches and finally flied out. The pitcher was very good, and the coaches complimented me on my grit and aggressiveness. So, I was satisfied ending the camp with a quality at bat. Looking back on both Headfirst and Showball, my main takeaways were: I definitely know I can compete defensively and was told and complimented that my fundamentals and mechanics were very good. Offensively, the feedback and my feelings matched. I felt the more I got comfortable, the more confidence I gained. I learned I had to attack more pitches and not be so selective, looking for the perfect pitch to hit. And as for athleticism, strength, and speed. I felt the camps validated what I already know. I am solid in all those areas, but I need to work very hard to improve and consistently set personal bests in the pro evaluation drills throughout the fall.

  • Headfirst Honor Roll Camp

  • The showcase camp was an exclusive camp for high academic student-athletes interested in playing baseball at colleges/universities that have very high academic standards. The showcase was very organized and well run with a lot of opportunities for interaction with the 70+ college coaches. I thought the experiences were difficult and challenging but fair. I liked the first day of spending almost 5 hours of focus on fundamentals, drills, and small group coaching prior to completing our normal pro style workout. I felt I was given individual attention and appreciated all the coaches' good advice. The nice thing about the morning sessions on the first day was I got to take a lot of ground balls at various infield positions, which allowed me to work on parts of my defensive game. And on offense, we worked on different hitting drills for quite awhile prior to having to perform officially for the coaches. This was very helpful in trying to get comfortable at the plate before our official testing. Finally, the games were great. We participated in 3 separate games over the course of two days. Because the games were slanted to favor the pitchers (beginning w/1-1 counts), and we just did not have time to figure out each pitcher's style, it was difficult in the beginning to get adjusted. So, early I struggled with the adjustment because I am a player that takes pitches, fouls a lot of pitches off, and works deep into counts. I tend to have a high on base percentage and high amount of quality at bats in regular HS and summer baseball games. But in these games, I had to learn to be much more aggressive early in the count. And, as the coaches explained, they were more interested in seeing us be aggressive and swing than take pitches that were not perfect. Also, the pitching was very good. Most pitchers were throwing in the mid-80's and had multiple pitches. So, this was difficult to gauge without seeing them for a couple of innings. So, it put a lot of stress on we the hitters to make aggressive choices. I really liked that there were coaches in the dugouts and in the field constantly talking with each of us, giving us excellent advice on our approach to offense and defense. All in all, the camp was an awesome experience. The in game feedback was very good, helpful, and encouraging. And the post camp feedback was the same. I learned I could compete with players from all over the region who were potentially Div. I to Div. III athletes. I felt defensively (especially fundamentally) at 2B, SS, & 3B, I was just as good as anyone else (due to the coaches' feedback). It really gave me a lot of confidence that I could play at the college level and was solid fundamentally. And I was fortunate to make 2-3 really outstanding plays at all three positions (where the coaches complemented me). Offensively, I thought as the games progressed, I got more comfortable and adjusted. I felt my last two game (against really good pitching), I had two very solid hits that were against really good pitching. So, I left encouraged and feeling very confident I could compete at a high level against the athletes I was seeing in the camp. And I learned I had a lot to work on to get better. So, it was a great experience. I recommend it for anyone wanting to play college baseball.

  • Participated in OSU's hitting camp run by their coaching OSU coaching staff. Participated in a variety of hitting drills, including tee work, soft toss/under hand toss, and overhand toss. Several drills were video taped. We were given varied feedback and brief, corrective tips during our individual sessions. Also, we used "Hit Trax" to review our exit velocity and proficiency with contacting the baseball. I felt I had a very good camp. I was complimented by several coaches on my overall fundamentals, consistency of hitting the ball square, and generating consistent and violent bat speed. I posted some of the video from the camp showing my performance in varied hitting sessions. Again, I felt I was able to apply techniques I had been working on w/my hitting coach, Coach Rick Gold (a Wittenberg Assistant Coach), to the camp.
