The love of the game has been in me since I was born. Most kids' first word is something like “Mama” or “Dada”, but not mine. My first word was “ball” and that has stuck with me every day since.
I have played sports since I was little, but baseball has always been special to me. I add value to the teams I play on because I am hard-working, coachable, and always hustle. Additionally, on the field, I do any job the coaches ask of me such as playing where needed and doing my job at the plate. This past year, my district opened a new high school and I got to be part of an inaugural baseball program. Beginning a new program has reiterated the importance of melding with a new team, taught me how to build capacity in others, and helped develop me into an exceptional team leader. Due to Covid and losing our baseball season last year I had no varsity starting experience coming into this season. However, I was afforded that opportunity this year and made the most of it. I led the team in doubles, hit .365 in the district season (including playoffs), had a .432 on base percentage, and a 9-2 record in 13 starts. I have a variety of pitching tools including a large differential between my fastball and my off-speed pitches. These tools helped me earn a low ERA of 1.32. Finally, for the 2021 Season, not only did our newly formed team make it to the third round of playoffs but I was awarded “Newcomer of the Year for District 10-5A”.
Whether in season or off season, I strive to put in extra work outside the field and at home (i.e., lifting in the morning, hitting, and pitching lessons at D-bat, hitting in the cages on the weekends). In addition, I focus on a positive mind-set and am a very quick learner. All these attributes I carry with me to the academic side as well. I am excellent at math and excel in my engineering courses. Furthermore, I have a good artistic ability as I recently won a medal at the high school state art show for my drawing of myself as a baseball player. Additional attributes I bring to the table are being personable, taking initiative, confidence, and taking constructive criticism well and using it to improve myself. I am a driven individual who enjoys working towards my goals and I continue to strive to be better in all areas both on and off the field.
After high school, my collegiate aspirations and goals are to obtain a degree in engineering as well as continue to grow and develop in the sport that I love. I want to continue to play baseball at the next level because of how much enjoyment the game brings to me while I earn my degree in engineering. College will help me continue to develop in both academics and as a ballplayer. Long term, I want to earn my degree, learn new techniques to improve my game, develop as a team leader, and continue to grow in both my athletic and intellectual abilities. My high school baseball team has adopted the motto of “Blue Collar Mentality.” This motto motivates me to always work hard, persevere, show integrity, and handle adversity. I strive to bring this mentality to all areas of my life. If given the opportunity, I know that I could add value to your team and would continue this type of mentality throughout my college career and beyond.
