- Cole Van Poppel is a 2020 RHP/1B with a 6-2 190 lb. frame from Rotan, TX who attends Rotan High School. Large, broad shouldered build with present strength proportioned nicely throughout frame, long limbs. Primary righthanded pitcher, begins with a side step moving into delivery with a high leg lift and coil at top while getting tall on backside. Utilizes a short stride down the mound and shows a full arm action through the back working to a three-quarters release point; taller finish and can continue to implement additional lower half. Fastball topped out at 83 mph, shows occasional cut and filled the strike zone while creating extension out front, able to induce ground ball contact. Comfort throwing curveball and landed for strikes, slows arm action at release, up to 70 mph with 12-6 shape. Changeup flashed fading life at 76 mph and could incorporate it more often into sequences. Gets low at the ball at first base, fields out front, developing footwork off the base. Righthanded hitter, begins with a wide base and medium hand set in the box; utilizes a toe tap for timing. Full swing path through the zone, gets to front side early but stays linear with swing path and shows carry off the barrel when squared to pull side. Very good student.
