My name is Mason Ross. I am a junior, and I play varsity baseball at Clearfield High School in Clearfield, UT. I am a catcher. As circumstances would have it, we lost our catcher at the end of my freshman year, and coach asked me if I'd fill in the hole, and I've been the starting catcher ever since. I love the game of baseball, and being the catcher on the team has given me an even greater love for the game. It's given me an opportunity to work closely with my coaches, to lead the team, to work closely with the pitchers on my team by motivating them when they're frustrated. I get to help them take advantage of their best pitches, and most importantly help them to have fun when it's what we call "a day at the office". I also enjoy working with the umpires, and building relationships with them.
I've loved the game of baseball since I was young enough to throw a ball. I've played on city league teams, on competitive teams the RMSB (Rocky Mountain School of Baseball), Legion teams, and now my high school team. The thing I love most is how the game grows with you. I'm always learning something new when I take the field everyday. I love how much work goes into the game. When I accomplish a goal on the field, it doesn't stop there for me. Accomplishing the goal just allows me to make a new goal, dig in, work harder, and learn more. So many of the lessons I've learned on the field have been lessons that I've been able to transfer into everyday life. I've learned to work hard on the field and off the field.
I would say that my work ethic is my greatest strength as a baseball player. I'm the first one at practice and the last to leave. I believe that will help me later in life when I'm either building a new bridge or pipeline for an oil company using my engineering degree or helping to rehabilitate an athlete from and injury using my sports medicine degree. Being able to achieve my degree through baseball would be a dream come true for me.
