I remember it like it was yesterday, I was just 4 years old when my dad first introduced me to video games. It was Lego Star Wars played on a playstation 2. It sounds crazy, but I feel like video games have changed my life! I had never had so much fun and been so excited by anything before and I still get those same feelings today.
A couple of years later I beat my dad for the first time whilst playing Call Of Duty Modern Warfare. I was truly elated and for the first time I felt like a competitive side of me had awoken! I had always been on traditional sports teams that my parents had chosen for me but never really cared if we won or lost but with video games, I felt the need to better myself and I actually cared if I won.
It was six days after my 13th birthday when Overwatch was released and I immediately fell in love with the game. Strategies and friend play together was awesome. I soon became one of the best players amongst my friends and ended up meeting many new friends from all over the world! I am always amazed when I realize that even though we often never meet in person, it is my online friends that are my closest. We have a great time together both playing the game and also outside of the game were we support each other with our home and school lives too.
To become more competitive, I switched to a PC and then met even more people. I currently have gamer friends that I have been playing with on a regular basis for over a year and we play not only Overwatch but other games too. I like the way when you first start playing with people you only know them by their username and then slowly you become real friends on a first name basis.
I currently coach a lower ranked Overwatch team and really enjoy helping others. I schedule games and practices and I am happy to say that we are now in the semi-finals and currently the best team in the league. I am also good friends with the other coaches and enjoy the friendly banter and competitive fun.
I have been to watch professional Overwatch games at Blizzard Arena and would love to be up there playing with a team one day.
Along with playing Overwatch, my other passion is building computers. The first time I disassembled and then consequently reassembled a computer was in 10th grade. I was nervous and excited but was thrilled when I was successful and it actually turned on. I recently had a PC built for me and now modify it myself to enhance performance.
Whether playing or building computers, I am at my happiest. My mom has always said, “If you love your job, you will truly never work a day in your life” and that is how I feel. If I can get an education in computer engineering while also playing competitive Overwatch, I will be truly thrilled.
Finally, my father is currently the Project Manager at Livermore National Laboratory building the world’s newest and fastest exascale supercomputer called El Capitan. One day, I would love to work alongside him building the next generation of high performance computers.
