Hi my name is Gillian Meaney and I am graduating in the class of 2022 at Milford High School in Milford Massachusetts. I have played as a Field Hockey goalie on my high school team for 2 years and have been playing for 4 years. I also play in multiple pickup / club style games.
Background
I started freshman year of high school as a versatile field player, mid way through freshman year when our JV goalie got a concussion I stepped up and tried out goalie. When she got better the coach asked me to stay on as goalie. I continued playing goalie and prepared myself to be moved up to varsity after our senior goalkeeper graduated.
My Biggest Challenge
My biggest challenge in my field hockey career was in my junior year of high school. With covid 19 we had no idea what would happen with our high school team. When we got the okay to start we got notice from our head coach, who has been the coach since my freshman year, that she would not be returning this season. I was in the headspace that I had guaranteed a varsity spot because I was the only returning goalie. When the new head coach told me I would not be on varsity my junior year I was devastated. I seriously considered quitting however, I already had so much love for the sport that I was determined to improve and prove that I was worthy of that varsity spot. I did end up playing a few varsity games for that team. When the season ended I signed up for my normal winter team as well as a goalie academy trained by Cape Ann FHC.
Lessons I have learned
Playing field hockey for four years I learned a bunch of valuable life lessons. I learned that nothing is guaranteed and even if you think you are the best there is always someone who wants to compete and is better than you. I learned how to work hard for the ability to play the sport I love.
My Goals
My Goal has always been to play Field Hockey at the college level, I do not mind what division I play in as long as I get to play the sport I love. I believe I have the potential and drive to play at this level because I was a three sport athlete in high school. I also strive to be an influential player to my team, pushing them to not only make them better athletes but also push my team to greatness. I am a determined, passionate, positive and knowledgeable player who understands the importance of sacrifice and hard work.
